Key FOB 850

Thinking of putting AutoStart on my new addition '97 850. It did not come with any Key FOB's. Are their any AutoStart FOB's that will also act as a remote for the Locks?

First, check that you can put a Volvo remote into action by turning the key to posII 5 times. The 5th time, leave the ignition on and check the little red light in the top of the dash. If it is shining steady, just buy a remote off of ebay, for a 1996, and program it by doing the same as above and hitting the unlock button and watching the red light flash rapidly for a few seconds.

Getting a remote starter. What ever for? All that buys you is a loss of gasoline by idling too long. Turning the butt warmer on when you start the car should be sufficient, the heat should start coming out of the blower in 1/2 mile of easy driving.

      Hi Klaus,

Just tried the procedure and at the 5th on to pos II the LED was NOT steady but Blinking. It Blinked rapidly for about 30 seconds and then went off.

This verifies that you do have the remote receiver installed in your car. There are two different remotes for 850s with distinct part numbers and distinct FCC identifier numbers. They look identical but they are not interchangeable. Your '96 should have the later model receiver with FCC identifier CWTTFWB1G and a part number that starts with a 9. You need to remove the glovebox to verify that though. Ignore all of big numbers on the label by the bar code, they are meaningless. The numbers you are looking for are the very small numbers that say part number and FCC identifier.

I used an older 3 series remote receiver that I picked up on eBay for my son's '96 so his numbers would not match based on the model year. The systems are interchangeable as a system but you cannot mix and match the remotes

The eBay sellers advertise all of their remotes as working for '93 to '97, they don't.

Be very careful when buying an aftermarket locking / starting / alarm systems. Most of the installers are teenagers that just hack the crap out of your wiring harness. I think all of the products are decent but it is the installation that is key.

I guess my mind is slipping. Your car will accept a used key fob for 1996 and not require any dealer intervention like the 1998+ cars.

BTW, my main reason (besides lazy) for the AutoStart is I live in PA and work in NJ during the week. And while in NJ I have no garage and in NJ they have in the many mornings of this annoying very very thin frost. and when I don't leave time to clean it's a pain.... With the autostart, as I'm getting dressed I fired her up and when I get out about three minutes later I'm good to go....

Looking at the FOB's I see they are going for about 50 bucks each. If I want two I'm at 100 bucks. I see place advertising 149 installed autostart which comes with two fob's....

Remotes on ebay are much cheaper if you get a used one. What catches your eye is this:
            http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_Car-Truck-Parts-Accessories__VOLVO-850-940-960-TURBO-ALARM-REMOTE-START-KIT-BEST_W0QQitemZ370136367052QQadiZ2865QQadnZCarQ20Q26Q20TruckQ20PartsQ20Q26Q20AccessoriesQQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item370136367052&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

Installation is not simple, but they don't tell you that.

The Volvo remote for 1996 is only a 2 button device, lock/unlock.
