I have been wanting to upgrade to a Volvo cd player for my base model 850 for some time now the only thing is that when i look in my owners manual it shows the base 710 model which is the cassette and the 815 model which is the CD player yet on Ebay Motors i found a 816 model that says it will fit an looks just like the 815 model yet i cant find it in my owners manual to say it will work. so my question is if anyone can tell me if the 816 CD player model will fit my 850. thanks.

Both models will fit your car. Just make sure it is a black face to match the rest of the dash. The newer cars use grey colored plastic.

I happen to have an old 816 and I just checked and confirmed that the connections are in fact the same (as a 97 850). When I plugged mine in it read ÖFF - but that may not be a clear indicator of compatability since this one had some issues (my daughter used the CD slot as a piggy bank).

The 816 was in my 2000 V40, so it might not be listed in the 1996 owners manual because it wasn't in use yet.

For what it is worth, I found that the Volvo radios on E-Bay were selling for a premium and I waited awhile before replacing it. However, when I was at my local automotive recycler he had one on the shelf for $50 - so it may be worth checking around.
