Steering Rack Identification 850 1997

Greetings-

I recently noticed that my front tires are wearing very badly, very quickly. A quick inspection reveals that the inner tie rods are bad (wish I had noticed this before mounting new tires......).

My plan is to thaw the car out and replace both inner and outer at the same time since they all have over 180k and I am going to need an alignment anyways. However, when I went to order the parts I see that there are two different types of racks on these vehicles (SMI & TRW). Can anyone tell me an easy way to determine which is on this car?

Also, if anyone has any tips to make the project easier, or suggestions of anything else I should do at the same time, feel free to let me know. Thanks!

Thanks Tom - once I knew where to wipe it became much easier! Previously I had been looking for stampings on the back of the unit. I saw TRW on the boot, but didn't completely trust that - however, it appears as though mine is in fact a TRW unit. Now, the fun begins....

Hi, I have a 850-94 and worked the steering rack out last summer. It has ID 34009799LH / Issue D stamped between the pinion and engine mount (upperside) and 'TRW' to the right from pinion bottom cup. One can also find 'VOLVO' and 'made in UK' around. Hope this helps you out.
