850 not starting 850 1996

Greetings to all. Have a pesky problem. Car sat for 5 days after topping up with fuel. Cold outside, in the teens. Won't start. Cranking over fine; on charger at 12.6 volts. 42lbs. on fuel rail. Coil lead shows a series of good sparks across an air gap to ground when cranking. OBD2 shows a fault P0336- CPS "A" Circuit Range/Performance; which I found peculiar since I have good spark.(I think) Anyway, rather than go get a new sensor for $70dealer/$50Europarts/and I want a fix now, I grabbed one for $20 out of a 850 involved in an accident at junk yard. Installed sensor, no change in condition. A few years ago I replaced the cam sensor. If I remember right, there was no spark when that badboy failed. It seems the injectors aren't firing, as I smell no gas, no firing or sputter. Open for suggestions. Thanks

    Hey Svenski:

sounds like you got a good problem there. If you have fuel and spark and no real meaningful fault codes.....next step is probably a tow truck. sometimes the MAF sensor screws up and the car wont start.....if you unplug it and try to start the car, sometimes the car will start with some "limp-home" setting. Might also disconnect the battery for overnight and try again in the morning. I wonder what a good old shot of ether would do in the throttle body. Let us know what the problem was. Merry Christmas.

Unplug the CPS and clean the contacts of both ends and try again. Make sure the plug is not laying on the the spark plug wires :)

Hmm... Crankshaft position sensor, not camshaft position sensor? Where the heck is a crankshaft position sensor? Is your timing belt OK, it should be since you ran the car last week.

Greetings. The crankshaft position sensor is located on top of bell housing just below and to the right of distributer. It senses a notch on ring gear to allow proccessor to calculate a firing solution. Proccessor also needs the cam position sensor input for spark initiation. I'll check that the camshaft is turning through oilcap. Thanks

GEWN mentioned not getting fuel. Is the fuel pump priming when you turn the key to posII??

Do a search for fuel pump relay and find the thread that explains how to jumper the FPR to get the pump running when ever the key is on.

Since you smell no gas......I would dump in some dry gas into the tank and try to start after 20 min or so.....if that doesn't work your fuel pump might have failed.

Greetings. Guage at schrader valve on end of fuel rail shows an immediate spike to 42 lbs when the key is turned to ign. Pressure holds when ign shut off. Thanks

This MIGHT be what was described to me as the lawnmower effect.
I had a very similar situation also in the cold etc..and the car just would not start..i had fuel i had spark and all the good bits..
Turns out what what happend was that the oil had drained away from the lifters and the head and when you try and start it now the lifter are NOT full of oil so the valves are not opening as much as they should creating a low compression situation and not firing up the engine,
Another of symptom was that mine cranked much much faster and freer under these conditions.
The fix for mine was to battery jump the battery with another car running and floor the gas pedal on the volvo as that shuts off the injectors and just crank that puppy..and i mean 2-3 minutes continuously to build up that oil pressure and move that oil around, and you dont want the injectors working because that would flood the plugs and wash the cylinder walls off of any oil which would be bad.

    Hope this helps.

Greetings. Initial post mentioned 42 lbs. on fuel rail. However I don,t think injectors are being ordered to spray. Intend to pursue coolent sensor and mass airflow sensor as these are on the fuel side of start inputs. Thanks

Greetings Wow that is a pretty radical condition I'll keep that in mind. First I have to prove gas is getting into the cylinders. Thanks
