Are Volvo exntended Warranties a Scam S60 2005

I am in the market to purchase another Volvo to replace my 1995 850 wagon w/ over 300k miles.

I test drove an 2005 S-60 w/ 73k miles that the owner had bought a Volvo extended warranty in 2007 w/ 4 year or 100,000 miles for ~ 1700. The dealer where the car and warranty were purchase close its doors 4 months ago. The owner call Volvo customer service to inquiry about transferring the extended warranty but was told that it was to expire early next year. Volvo claims that the 4 year period starts at the point were the car was made/2005 and not the 2007 purchase date.

Can you please share you experiences and thoughts with regard to this matter!!

Thank you,
Humberto

Did the owner purchase the car at a Volvo dealer? Was the car certified preowned, or is it a third party warranty? I bought my '05 car at a Volvo dealer a year ago, CPO. I just utilized the CPO warranty with no problem - they looked it up in the computer.

I don't think Volvo warranties are scams, but they come in many flavors. The owner should have the paperwork that came with the warranty - it states the terms. If he lost it, I don't know what to say. It depends what warranty the owner purchased, and he should KNOW what the terms are.

My warranty is not transferable to a future owner.

He is the first and only owner of this car and the wife wanted to have a peace of mind and does why he purchased the extended warranty. What seem very strange is the effective date. The date on the paper work shows a 2007 purchase date and know Volvo claims that the 4 year is retroactive to 2005 when the vehicle was made. To make matters a little worst the dealership close its doors some months ago.

I am going to ask him for a copy from the warranty juts to read some of the details.

You can add an extended warranty to 100K miles onto any car, bought new, up to the limit of its original warranty. That's why the purchase date of the warranty is 2007 when the purchase date of the car is 2005. But the extended warranty's lifespan is measured from the purchase of the car, not the time the extension is extended.
In other words, it extends the life of the original warranty, but is not a brand new warranty with a new start date.

If it is a genuine Volvo warranty, you are entitled to covered service at any Volvo dealership -- it is not a scam -- but in practice another dealer doesn't have to give you privileged service, meaning you may have to wait a while to get an appointment, and they may not offer you a loaner, things that they offer to their own regular customers. If you're not handy making d-i-y repairs, you might want to begin cultivating a "relationship" with another dealer that is still open.

        Good luck.

Since the previous owner apparently knew he was going over the 50k miles/4 years warranty, it sounds like he purchased the extended warranty for 4 years/100k miles from the date of the new car purchase (i.e., in 2005). We have a 2006 S60 and we still have such an option up to a certain time. Volvo warranties should not be scams. Good luck.

1995 850 turbo sedan (170k miles, bought it new and still love it)
2006 S60 2.5T (24k miles, bought it new and my wife loves it; clearly a FORD-VOLVO)
