Wheel Bearings on XC: engineered to fail @?

Hi All,
My wife`s XC has been in the shop for passenger side front whl bearing R`n`R. Just had a call that they took it out for test drive & the driver`s side whl bearing is also noisy & on it`s way out. Is it standard practice to replace both sides at the same time & should my indie(not a Volvo guy) have checked the other side at the time.
The XC has 92 K on it. What`s the approx life span of whl bearings these days? I had 240s that got a whole lot more than 100K out of them. I understand that these are sealed units but are they designed to fail @ 100K or less?
Interested in your responses!
Thanks,
Rich

I think Volvo changed suppliers with the P2 cars and got cheaper bearings. My 1998s lasted over 150K. I wonder if the XC90 uses the same size and if they are beefier? The XC90 rubber strut mount is the same size as the 70 but better quality.

    Merry Christmas,

    Klaus

PS, thanks for sending the -F weather down here :)

Is your mechanic doing the job? It may be the PS was the louder, and after it was replaced, the DS's behavior became apparent.

The DS went 150K miles on my '95 850, and the PS kept going.

I can't say what is what is "normal" or "typical".

    Don
