V70 Engine Swap B5244 Non turbo to turbo.... V70-XC70 2001

Our 2001 V70 is in need of a new auto transmission (after only 60K Miles and not that impressed). I can get my hands on a very reasonably priced damaged 2001 S60T as a complete car. Whilst I first and foremost need the car for the auto box, I figure I may as well look at putting the Light Pressure turbo motor in which I believe is the B5244T3 and give the family chariot a bit of extra power.

Is there anything that IS NOT interchangable, I believe that it would require the donor cars turbo ECU as our car is non-turbo however does the two cars have the same wiring harness and connections thus enabling a relatively forward exchange. Any other expected issues on the changover and/or complications expected would be greatly appreciated in advance. Hopefully this is a fairly straight forward motor/trans swap!!! Certainly looks the cheapest way out as the whole car which has only minor damage is worth less than a reconditioned gearbox so I think it may be worth the risk in buying the car.

V70 Engine Swap B5244 Non turbo to turbo.... V70-XC70 2001

I have the same car, bought only 2 months ago. I didn't do my homework and the seller tricked me pretty good. Now I have accepted my fate since I've spent all my money buying this car. So did you swap the engine? I am thinking of this option also. Changing to a new or different tranny won't help much since I've read so many horror stories of this AW55-50 tranny. There is really no way out, except maybe change the engine to something else. I thought of looking of a nice toyota engine or something.

I wish that I could help with technical info on your swap but I don't have that kind of knowledge.I will say that I think our 2001 S-60T has no lack of power. If you move forward with this purchase and would be interested in selling some S-60T spare parts,I have an immediate /on going need for a set of rear coil springs. Please e-mail me at(odenweller@hotmail.com)
Thanks Bill

V70 Engine Swap B5244 Non turbo to turbo.... V70-XC70 2001

That is a tough question. Both cars have the same block and tranny. The difference is in the wiring harness and computers.
Because you are buying the entire car, swapping the wiring harness should be just fine, as well as the exhaust manifold with the turbo. There might be some minor issues, like the fuel lines, but that can be easily overcome with a little forethought.

You might even be lucky and just leave the engine/tranny bolted to the sub frame and remove the whole thing by lifting the chassis up and out of the way???

V70 Engine Swap B5244 Non turbo to turbo.... V70-XC70 2001

Klaus,

Unsure at the moment, I am sort of thinking worst case scenario is transplant the tranny and sell the turbo motor. Should be able to pick up the car for about $2-3K which should give me some solid options, would really love to do the engine swap though. Our V70 is a excellent car that just needs some "boost" so to speak.

I think that if the connections on the ECU are the same it would simplify it enormously. Klaus, if we need to change over the wiring harness sounds like a shocker of a job. Thanks for your help so far......

V70 Engine Swap B5244 Non turbo to turbo.... V70-XC70 2001

If you can decifer and ignore some of the comments on volvospeed.com, repost over there. They have some very good people who can help and might have even done this with the P2 cars. I have seen threads where they swapped auto trannies to manuals and played around with different ECUs.
I don't know, but suspect that the engine wiring harness is compatable with the fuses in the engine compartment and the plugs on the passenger side of the firewall. The ECU is different between the turbo and the NA engines of course, but they can be interchanged in an emergency basis - performance results are marketly different but the engine will run.

This total swap would be very interesting. A feeler call to a GOOD Volvo mechanic would also be fruitful. None of us in the USA have diagrams of RHD cars, and turning the blueprints over probably wouldn't help that much. This "project" needs to be thought out.
Lots of luck.

I don't really know, but the exhaust system comes to mind to check out. Does it have to be beefed up? and how do all the electronics react to the swap, esp the ones monitoring emission. Just a thought.
