Translating Codes 422 and 412 850 1997

Can someone tell me what these codes mean? The shop says it needs a new Air Mass Sensor (or is it Air Mass Meter?)
THANKS!

    Translating Codes 422 and 412 850 1997

This site is useful for Pnnnn codes: http://www.actron.com/code_lookup.php

P0422 = O2 sensor for cat below thresh hold
P0412 = SAS valve error, secondary air system

Neither have anything to do with the MAF/AMM sensor. Is this a Volvo shop you went to?

I would first check the hoses going to the SAS valve, any cracks and replace the hoses first.
Then check other vacuum elbows for leaks to clear up the P0422.

      Translating Codes 422 and 412 850 1997

It's with my usually reliably Indy guy who does a lot of Volvo's, but not exclusively. I just called him and asked about the P0422 and he says no, it's just a Volvo code 422 and he knew that P0422 was about the cat converter. He sounds like he knows what he's talking about and I have been taking my 4 volvos to him for years. So I think we're on the right track. He is replacing a couple of old hoses and then we'll see if the code(s) come back.

      Thanks Klaus for your help.

If your mechanic has a Volvo scan tool, great!! But there is no Volvo 422 or 412 code number.

I have to half way agree with Klaus on this one. There is no listing for a 412 code in the Volvo service manual for that system. There is a listing for the 422 though and I just had a car in yesterday for that code, first time that I can recall seeing it in all of the years I have worked on them. It is listed as an "atmospheric pressure sensor" code. Bad pressure sensor like you see in a lot of the later model cars. I swapped it out and it was good to go.

          Good luck,
          Mark

          Update 850 1997

To follow-up, he changed out all the little hoses because many were cracked/old, reset the check engine light and hopefully that will forestall needing a AMM.

Regarding the codes, he works on a lot of Volvos and showed me how the reader gives him the AMM message. So I am confident he is correct (until proven otherwise, as usual!).
Thanks again Klaus for your assistance.
