DIM / Driver Information Module????? XC90

Does anyone know what this part does? Where it is located? Any general information would be helpful. Presently, my 2003 XC90 is going into the shop on Monday to have the DIM replaced for $1600. I was told there are only 3 available in the the US... that they have never had to replace this part on other models... and that it may or may not solve the problem I am having but they think it should do the trick! Makes me a bit weary...

I have tried to research the part on line with no avail.

Best Regards,
Anastasia

The D.I.M. is the complete instrument cluster. It is software driven and they fail frequently. Normally in stock at most dealer parts depts.

I had the same problem but on a V70 Volvo.
I am personal friends with the dealership mechanic. Even he said its a problem.
I found a company in Toronto Canada to fix my cluster. You need to unhook the battery before you unplug the connector. There is a Youtube video on how to take out the the DIM Module. Here is the website http://xemodex.com/technologyimproved/drivers-information-module-for-volvo.
They did a Great Job. My car is good as new!

DIM / Driver Information Module????? What happened? XC90

Well... I dropped my car off on Sunday. It was supposed to be fixed first thing...now it is 10:30AM and I haven't received a phone call yet. Part of me hopes it's not the problem, just because the part is so expensive. I have done further research regarding the SRS Airbag Service Urgent message and it seems to be a problem that happens more often with S60 and S80. It also appears that the warning is often displayed if procedures during installations are not performed in sequence. I have read a few posts that pretained to the Climate Control Module and something called the upper module causing the problem.

My gut feeling tells me that replacing the DIM is not going to solve the problem.

Because....
About 4 weeks ago my digitial clock started to have a mind of its own when I turned on the car ( it would just run through the numbers till it felt like stopping, not sure if it went backwards or forwards). Then I thought that the heating system was acting up, ie. it seemed to me that the climate control was doing its own thing... kinda lengthy & hard to explain. Then there is this little gremlin that loves my stereo. This is the second stereo in this car! It likes to listen to the radio at random times when I want to listen to a CD or it goes into auto search, illumination lights on keys work sometimes and not others and on occasion when I turn on the car my stero will not work at all(more often when I am driving for over a couple of hundred miles)!

My take on the whole thing reminds me of some problems I had with my old 740 T wagon. I get cold... so I run the heat on full almost all the time... go for long drives back and forth to New England, NC, Colorado, Texas... I just keep the sunroof open when I get too hot... my stereo used to freak out then too! I think that because I do this I might have heated some componants up say behind the cluster panel and the center console area... perhaps I "tweaked" something. My clock hasn't acted up since this warning light came on and neither has my climate system... stereo still behaves badely(althought these may just be coincidences)!

Thanks for asking! I will post an update when I get the word!

Best Regards,
Anastasia
