My check engine light keeps comming back up with a 0442.

I had heard that this is sometimes caused by a worn gas cap? Is this a possible cause, and/or what do owners suggest.

Mine is a 1999 C70 with about 145,000 miles. I love it. I still keep the top down most of the time, even with the cold weather... As long as the seat heaters keep working with the warm air :)

    To verify it is the gas cap, put a little vasoline on the seal and see if that keeps the code away. Kmart sells "lockable" caps for our cars at about $8-9.

    Mine has been gone for about 2 weeks now after the vasoline treatment.

      I did not have vasoline...

      I used wheel bearing grease, and thought that would seal the same way...

      It did not help. The code still comes and goes...

      It only seems to come up if I am idling a lot, like if I get caught in traffic. If I drive quickly, and do not stay still too much, I do not get the code at all.

        I just fixed my 1998!!! The evap purge valve hangs on a vacuum line that comes from the charcoal canister. Just below the valve is a clear filter. The vacuum line between the filter and valve had started to fall apart on the inside and clogged up the valve.
        I cleaned the valve with throttle body cleaner, any cleaner should work. Then tapped the valve on a shop rag to check the amount of dirt comming out. I was told the electrical connection on the valve is 12V, to open the valve. I suspect this may be true, but cleaning without opening worked for me. It is supposed to open when there is a lot of vacuum in the intake, which is why you only get the code when the engine is pulling vacuum at low rpms.

    The CEL will come on if the gas cap is not secured properly or if the gasket is not sealing...

    Not sure of the CEL code 0442... What is the text title associated with the error code?

      I don't know what the CEL is.

      I have a cheapo reader, and it only says the number. The book for my reader says that the 0442 means a small leak in the emissions system.

      I will keep looking...
