I recently bought a 2004 XC70 and living in Canada the snow's not far off. Could anyone advise me if 205/55R16's tires on 16" rims with a 5x108 mm bolt pattern would work with my car? My Volvo handbook recommends 215/65R16. Is the bolt pattern the same for all 16" rims?

I cant` answer your question re rim/tire size for the XC but am interested in any responses.
My wife has an 03 XC & we are looking at snow tires for approaching winter here in Alberta. On her old 95 850 we used Gislaveds & later Nokian which were also very good for winter conditons here. I`m wondering about the Michelin X-Ice but have had no experience with Michelin snows. I`m inclined to go with the Nokians again but am open to recommendations.
Have you decided on brands yet?

I have been running Nokian Wr all weather tires on my 2000 XC and a friend is running them on his 2004 V70.
I just put new Nokian WR G2 on my 2000XC and on our new Honda accord.
I'm completely impressed with the WR g2( third generation tire)
I'd say they are as good as most winter tires, maybe some top end winter tires may be some what better.
The WR g2 can be used all year round and no need to change.

Know the winter weather conditions well!!!
We live south of High River. I`m very likely to go with Nokian winters on my wife`s XC. WE ran them on the 850 wagon & I was very happy with their performance in bad weather. There`s only about a week or so(combined) of weather where you really need winters but when you do, you REALLY do! She does the daily commute to the city & I want the best tires on one of the safest cars on the road.

We live in Edmonton and our dauther teaches in northern Sask. and drive home most weekends.(4hour drive)
I gave her our V70XC, with the nokian WRG2 tires ( second set) and they prform well.We also have them on our new accord
Our friend lives in Slave Lake and has used these tire for the last 8 years, on his pick up and V70.
Our weather here requires winter tires 4 month of the year or more.
I would say these tires would be ideal for your wife, as they are also good on wet/dry pavement driving
Check them out on the web, I think you well be impressed.

Thanks for the info & recommendation. Yes, Edmonton gets way more winter than we do(love those Chinooks!!).
Next time I`m in KalTire I`ll check those WRG2`s out. Weather has been excellent here all Fall but I don`t want to push my luck or in this case, my wife`s. BTW, I`ve been running Nokian Hakkapellitta`s winters on the ranch truck but I haven`t been impressed. Definitely not great in snow & dubious ice performance.

I live in northwest canada. (Alberta)
We do have our share of weather/snow/ freezeing rain etc.
As for Nokian wrG2 tires, they may not be the best snow tire, but they sure beat the hell out of any all season tire I have ever used or seen.

The smaller tire will be off by at least 5mph!! That means worse gas mileage and higher odometer readings.

Actually, the AWD on your car will handle snow quite nicely. Unless you have high performance summer tires mounted, which most people don't on an XC.

My V70 has awd and all season tires, never had any problems with snow and ice. Not bad for Minnesota.

16inch Volvo wheels will fit your car, BTW.
