2006 V70 passenger and driver front doors rattle V70-XC70 2006

Does anybody else have a annoying little rattle in their front doors that only occurs when driving on rough asphalt or concrete fwy/hwy ? I can not pin down the location of it sounds like it is coming from the area of the seatbelt retractor in the pillar but sometimes I can make it stop by putting my elbow into the door towards the back of the armrest. Also has anybody had the door panels off is it hard? any hints. This rattle is driving me crazy!

As an autoglass tech and a volvo nut I can tell you what I have run into several times with later model Volvos. As you are facing the inner workings of the door with the panel removed,on the left side glass run channel(or right side,if you are working on the p side of the car) that the doorglass travels in at the lower end can come loose from the inner part of the door.this can cause an annoying rattle. If this the case the rattle tends to go away when the window is rolled down.

The next time you hear the rattle, toggle the window button "UP" a couple of times and see if stops the rattle. It works for our 2003 XC. I suspect the Auto close does not always leave a pre-load on the mechanical parts and the rattle occurs because of operating clearances.

    Hi KMH154,
I have the same rattle on my 2002 V70XC: front passenger door, stops when I push on the door handle. The inner door panel is very easily removed and all the connections snap on and off very easily, including the cable for the door latch, but be sure to put a piece of masking tape over the panel pop rivets adjacent to the ones you are removing since they tend to fly out and vanish. I have had that panel off 4 times so far and cannot find the source of that anoying little rattle. I had the same rattle in the driver's sider door and I wrapped self adhesive foam over every exposed cable and it stopped. No such luck with the passenger door. I intend to try again this weekend and will report back. One amazing bit of data: our cross-country was in at the dealer's for service and my wife took home a 2008 v60 loaner. It has the same rattle. Must be a Volvo thing.

thanks for the tips , it is really hard to pin down being so inconsistent I will try the window up and down first before tearing everything apart. I would have no problem with the rattle if the car had 326k like my 240 but at only 40k and what we pay for these I cannot live with it yet. thanks kyle

stripping90 above seems to have a hot tip. I'm planning to take my panel off and have a look. Good luck.

I found the source of my front door rattles. It is the side view mirror mounts. This was accomplished by systematic test drives with and without interior door panels and with and without side view mirrors. For my 2002 v70xc, I removed the triangular plastic cover in the lower front corners of the front door windows. Remove the nut that holds the retaining bolt and remove the mirror, place a rubber washer over the bolt and replace the mirror and replace the nut and tighten. In order to remove the mirror far enough out to get the retaining bolt out of its hole, you may need to remove the whole door panel and snap the wires for the mirror adjustmnent motor/temp sensor out of its harness to get enough play to remove the mirror assembly. As and added precaution I placed self adhesive foam on both sides of the sheet metal where the mirror is mounted.

I guess if you can make it stop by pushing into the door panel, then the noise isn't coming from inside the pillar. There is some serious metal between the door panel and inside the pillar.

Maybe there is something loose under the panel. Here is the directions on taking off the panel.

I took off my rear door panel once, here is what it looks like inside. Lots of noise damping foam :) But also some wires and cables running around.
