MAF questions 850 1995

My friend's car is a manual shifter. It started to run a little rough on the home commute. The next morning, the car wouldn't start. Code from A-2 is 1-2-1, MAF sensor signal absent or faulty.
He unplugged the MAF and still no start. The engine is not a turbo, but shouldn't it have started and idled anyway?

Very confused.
We have ruled out any fuel problems.
He is off to get a can of MAF cleaner and see what happens.

    MAF questions - Solved 850 1995

Despite the code indicating the MAF, it appears that was not the issue.

I had done a quick check for spark the first day the car wouldn't start. I had at least some spark, but I noticed that the ignition wires said 94-42 on them. I bought this car in February with no records and figuring that that code might mean the 42nd week of 1994, I ordered new wires right away and they arrived today. After installing them, the car started, so I guess weak spark was my issue all along.

It says a LOT for the Volvo/Bogicord wires if they were 14 years old before they finally gave it up! I recommend a shorter replacement interval, however.

Thanks for all your help, Klaus and for others who had suggestions. Just goes to show that it pays to eliminate all the simple things first.

    Andy

That's good news. Now, clear all of your codes except B-2 so you have a good starting point.
You still ought to check the accordian section of the air line between the filter and the throttle body. Even small cracks can be a real problem.

      Have fun driving the car,

    MAF questions 850 1995

I once tried starting my 850 (a 1995 NA, manual trans. model) having forgotten to re-connect the MAF sensor. Car was running fine prior. I had it torn apart to gain access to something, but at this point it was all back together save for the connector. I recall it fired and bucked, but would not idle. Obviously very confused it was. Also, I've found that it REALLY doesn't take kindly to air leaks downstream of the MAF. Not at all like a 240 which, in my experience, will idle and still move (sort of) with the MAF disconnected and/or massive air leaks in the intake downstream of the MAF.

Pretty sure that doesn't help much, but may make some sense of the no-start. There's no other code, perhaps for timing? Cap, rotor and cam sensor all in order? Worth pulling the air intake tube to check for leaks while you're in there.

    Good luck,
    Will

    MAF questions 850 1995

Long time ago, I had A2 1-2-1, but starting was never a problem; however, mine is a 1995 turbo sedan.

Are there any other codes from A6 and A3?
