Checking OBD 1 850 1995

Today I tried to check my OBD for fault codes. I consulted my Haynes manual for the procedure and had no luck. The manual says to have the ignition switched to off and then place the jumper into slot 6 in bank A, then switch the ignition to on. It then says to press the test button on bank A for about a second and then wait for the codes to appear. I followed this procedure and got nothing...not even the 1-1-1 no faults detected code. Is there something I misread or did wrong?
Thanks!

Jon

Most of us cheat a little and turn the key to posII before we even open the hood, saves a few steps. If the jumper wire hasn't been used in a while, make sure it is clean, a little steel wool helps, and that the wire is connected on both ends.
Lee is correct, try the other positions before crying uncle.

Great thanks guys!!! I will give it another shot here in a bit, before I default to driving over to the neighborhood Checker Auto and have them do the OBD II readout for me.
