Whose fault is it? V70-XC70 1998

I just had the front left axle replaced on my '98 V70 AWD (112,000 miles). Within 2 weeks and only about 500 miles, the left front wheel bearing (hub) has gone bad. Was it due to go bad (i.e., how long SHOULD hubs last on this car?), or is this likely a result of the axle being installed carelessly, too tight, too loose, etc?

the bearing is an relatively inexpensive part. my mechanic would have suggested that i get it replaced it while he was fixing the axle(s).

10 years and 112k miles is decent life for a bearing although i would expect better life and more miles too. it is likely nobody's fault, just poor luck/timing

The axle nut holds the two halves of the bearing in position against the rollers. The bearing may have lasted longer had it not been disturbed. When I changed my axle,I replaced the bearing with it.

I had a left front bearing go at 77K on my 850GLT. Your mechanic did not cause the failure. I don't know if he could have detected this and alerted you. Who knows. Old cars can be fickle. Enjoy the new bearing.
