volvo code 335 obdII code p1617 p1618 850 1995

i parked my car thursday night, it rained all day thursday. friday morning it wouldnt start, i changed oil, plugs and put on a new cap and rotor, still it wont start i ran the test and first it came up 335 now it says 111 no faults detected, after searching the board i noticed a post addressing loose connections in the ignition i thought this may be relavent because my abs light has been coming on periodically, the shifter wont go into drive with the abs light on, then i realized that if i moved the key a bit the abs indicator light would go off and i could shift it out of park, so with that little aside behind me, the code that came up was 335 (request for mil from tcm) which i have searched this evening for two hours to find an exact meaning for to no avail so far. while doing this search i have also realized maybe it could be the fuel injector relay or the fuel pump relay. one thing keeps coming back to me. it ran fine thursday although it rained heavily all day and i was driving stop and go all day, in the rain. friday morning it wouldnt start. the cap had no cracks, but it did need to be changed---after changing the cap and rotor is there a sequencing procedure i failed to do? thanks for reading and any ideas or input will be greatly appreciated

Don't forget to look at A-1 to see if there are any tranny codes. The 335 just tells the computer that there is a serious falt in the tranny and the check engine light needs to be turned on. Clearing the 335 on A-2 works, but you still need to check A-1.

Now, rain or water should not prevent a no start unless the engine won't crank, which would indicate a short at the starter wiring. Listen for the fuel pump priming when you turn the key to posII, if there is no noise, it is probably the fuel pump relay. Search for fuel pump relay and you will find a hotwire trick to turn on the fuel pump, that will let you know if the fuel pump is working and the relay is bad, or vice versa.

Sounds like you need to change out the electrical portion of the ignition switch anyway.

When you changed the cap, I hope you didn't follow the Haynes manual for the plug wire positioning. It is WRONG!! The wire for plug #1 is at 9:30 and the wire for #3 is at high noon.

PS, you should not change the oil when the engine is cold.

Gadzooks man! Your advice is usually spot on but "not prevent a no start", huh?

The 3-3-5 will not prevent the engine from starting, it only turns on the CEL.

He does need to change out the ignition switch, we all agree.

Glad to see you still out here and reading :-)

I hope you are doing it yourself, it is fairly straight forward. Because the fuel pump went, I suggest replacing the fuel filter at the same time. It may be getting clogged and causing the pump to work extra hard and hot.

And, don't forget to replace the ignition switch. Easy to do and inexpensive.

Replace the electrical part of ignition switch! (I take it that the car does crank over, correct?) If the windshield cowell was full of water, the fuel pump relay may have got water in it? good luck
