Timing belt trying to come off 850 1996

Just got done doing a complete timing belt job on my 225k Volvo. Water pump, camshaft seals, new idlers and tensioner. The only thing I did not do was the crankshaft seal.

Now the belt is tracking to the outside. The only thing stopping it is the inside of the vibration damper. It is a Conti belt, I have never had any trouble with them.

There is no visible misalignment of any component (like you can really see in there!). The only suspect is the idle pulley that goes with the tensioner. It would not pivot when I torqued the bolt down. I replaced the bushing with the old one which was slightly longer (maybe 0.005"). The length increase was enough to allow it to pivot freely.

Any experience or help with this problem would be greatly appreciate.

Turns out it was the FCP Groton tensioner. I finally got a good eyeball on it and could see that the belt came on the pulley flush and left it tracking about 0.06" to the outside.

Hard to measure but the bracket is definitely bent. Transferred the bushing and pulley back to the old bracket and the belt is tracking normally.

Yes, it is a shame to see a manufacturing problem that has been ongoing for so long. FCP is usually a little more conscientious, at least in my experience of dealing with them for several years. I will contact FCP and have a little discussion.

Some things are just too vital for my car and I always go OEM, even if the dealer charges more. The tensioner roller is one of them, along with the belt. The other parts...

    OEM just fits better.

I had exactly the same thing happen on the last tensioner roller I bought from FCP Groton last year. It was an OEM INA Brand and, using the feeler gauge in my eye, I would estimate the shoulder was around 0.010 shorter. I did exactly the same thing as you and used the old shaft on the new roller. My belt is also tracking slightly to the outside and it tracks along the outside edge of the sprockets and rollers.

I dropped an email to Nick about it and I assumed that INA had been notified of the production problem. It is disturbing that the same problem exists a year later.
