Service records from dealership V70-XC70 2003

Hi all,

I have a question about service records. I bought my xc70 from a used car dealer in Toronto who bought it from Volvo Canada. Very happy so far. Anyway, I'm wondering how hard it would be to find the service records. Can I call Volvo Canada and get this information? Does Volvo have some sort of obligation to give me a set of records, or answer if asked whether or not certain work has been done or not, or tell me what dealership the work was done at? I ask because she's coming up to about 110 kkm and we noticed there is no sticker on the timing cover. I'd rather not lose the top end of the motor :) So maybe a good idea to see if the belt has been done or not. I was quoted $700 cdn for the timing belt; sound reasonable?

Thanks!

Yaleh.

USA spec cars have the timing belt change at 105K miles, around 160Kkm. Dealer service records are stored at the local dealer, not shared country wide.

Hi KlausC,

Thanks for the response. So in your experience, have dealerships been friendly to new owners of used vehicles when they are looking into the service history of a vehicle maintained by said dealership? To my mind, they have an incentive, in that I may become a future customer. just wondering if yourself or anybody else has gone through it before. It must be fairly common. And thanks for the specs on timing belt service. I guess I can wait a while- I would still like to have some records mind you. So far the only thing I had happen are a headlight, tail running light and license plate bulb go. I hear these cars "eat" bulbs?

Yaleh.

It is the dealer's interest to provide you with service records if they have them. I never had a problem, even going through a dealer's service records on a potential used car that they had serviced.
My bulbs seem to last a long time, I have never replaced a headlight bulb. Of course, I have the daytime running lights turned off :) which you cannot do by law. Your instrument lights will last longer if you do not drive with the headlights switched on during the daylight hours.
If you do not have an owner's manual, get one from the dealer. Also, make sure you get the radio code, in case you have to unhook the battery sometime in the future.

Great- so I'll start calling the dealerships here in town and try and see which was the one doing the service.

I had heard you can do a software change to have the daytime lights turned off- I guess that is what you had done?

I have the small glove box owner's manuals in the folding pouch, but no shop type ones. I was thinking of buying the Haynes manual. I liked the Bentley one I had for the 240, but I don't know if there is a "bible" like that for an '03 xc70.

Now, this radio code- I don't know what this is all about- can you enlighten me?

Thanks again KlausC!

Yaleh.

I forgot, yours is an 03 and has no radio anti theft code.

Canada requires DRLs, the dealer may not be able to legally turn them off. Besides, each download will cost you a fortune.

Haynes is only good up to 1999. Get on Ebay and look for a VADIS CD for a 2003 or newer. It is pirated, so beware. It is cheap for what it contains. Every model that Volvo has produced.

Thanks KlausC. I think I "found" a download of VADIS. Will see in a bit if it's the right one..

Ah. Right.. Radio code is an anti theft thing. Do the thieves know it has this though? If the radio is stolen, then neither of us can use the radio ;)

I double any theft would want an OEM radio these days.
