2033 V70 VIN number interpretation V70-XC70 2003

Hi

I'm looking at getting a second Volvo - moving up from the 9 series to a 2003 XC70. We'll still keep the 9 series (1994 940GL wagon) but replace the wife's hated Camry wagon with the Volvo.

I've seen a higher mileage (136,000km) example of a 2003 XC70 advertised which is coming into NZ as a used car ex Japan. (About half the cars in NZ come into the country this way)

The car is still in transit from Japan but the guy selling it gives the Vin nbr as SB5254AWL-41132686. I thought Volvo Vins all started YV.....

My main reason in asking for the Vin is to check that it is in fact a 2003 model with the Haldex AWD and the later 2.5 litre engine.

Can anyone interpret the VIN and confirm this?

The other problem is that the car seems suspiciously cheap, so I'll have to be careful that it's not a repaired accident or water damaged car. The higher mileage helps drive the price down a bit I know, as in NZ most people want below 100,000km (60,000 miles approx)

For those who are interested below is the link - the "Buy now" price of NZ$13,900 equates to approx USD9700. (Ebay got into the market too late in NZ - Trademe has 90% of the internet auction market in NZ and the NZ founder sold the company for a couple of hundred million a few years back)

    2033 V70 VIN number interpretation V70-XC70 2003

An update to my earlier message, I queried the Vin number and it got restated as YV18Z59G741132686

The seller was unsure about the 4th character being an 8 saying that it was hard to read on the Japanese auction sheet, and when I use the Vin decoder on http://www.analogx.com/cgi-bin/cgivin.exe it comes up with the check digit (9th character) as being invalid. Also interestingly it has a year code (10th character) of 4, which makes it a 2004 model.

The Japanese auction grades were Exterior 3.5 and interior C which translate to:
Exterior - Vehicle has a few scratches or dents visibly. The grade is usually given to a vehicle in average condition.
Interior - Clean but with cigarette burn.

Anyway, I've gone off it now as I found out it has a cream / beige interior - I definitely want the charcoal interior. Also, that rear tinting looks a bit horrible according to my wife (who has a minor but important role in the vehicle selection process...!)

The good news from my point of view is that in a depressed vehicle market sales at prices such as this XC70 will drive the market down. I've seen a 2004 XC90 T6(100,000km with full service history) at the Volvo dealer drop from NZ$49,000 to NZ$35,000 in a period of 6 months.

    John

4th and 5th digits should be S=V70 and Z=XC, 59 is the engine code, 2.5l low pressure turbo, all 03's had haldex.

Your VIN has too many digits, it is only 17 numbers.

As for the XC90, they have a hard time selling them in the USA also. The twin turbo 6 cylinder model burns too much gasoline, and the high profile body has a terrible coeffecient of drag - lousy gas mileage.
Stick with the 2.5L engine, a good design with enough bhp and nice mpg figures. Plus, it carries more cargo than the XC90 and the lift height is lower. Just get a roof rack for the occasional bulky stuff.
If you find an 04, get it!
