01 V70 T5 Automatic 90,000 mile service V70-XC70

I'm soon coming up on my 90K service. Up to this point I've had the dealer do all service, but economics have changed, and I'll be doing this myself. This is well within my limits as I've built several engines, and until this Volvo (had 3 prior), have never used the Stealership. I have noted there is a lot of wise owners on this forum, and would like to get any suggestions they may wish to offer me. I'll be taking other member's suggestions and will be replacing early the timing and accessory belts, and all suggested inspections of the maunal and change out of the following :

Timing belt Tensioner
Spark Plugs (OEM)
Air Filter
Cabin Filter
Brake Fluid Flush
Anti-Freeze Change
PVC Inspect and clean (is this just blowing out the system as I read on a previous post)?
Engine Oil Change
Engine Filter Change
(Previously flushed the transmssion at 75,000)

Should I consider the front crank seal, water pump, tensioner and idler pully (or wait till the next belt service at 180,000 miles)? How about changing the power steering fluid? Seems overkill, but still....... Anything else I'm missing? Any suggestions for removing the vibration damper without Volvo tool 999 5433, or should I just buy one, and if so where? Thank you in advance oh wise ones, Ha ha!!!!!

    If you flush the PS fluid, make sure you use CHF-11S. ATF speced in the manual is wrong.

    On timing belt. They sell a 3 piece kit including the pulley as well besides the tensioner + belt to replace any sealed greased rotating mechanisms.

    Here are some notes on doing the belt without taking off the damper. It is a bit of a fishing trip to get the belt on tho.

      Howard,

      Thanks for the advice on the power steering fluid, and thanks for the link on directions for doing the job. I had a small leak in the power steering pump that had to be worked on twice while under warrenty, and when I noticed the leak, I had to add fluid. I consulted the maual andused Redline ATF. It's been in there for quite some time, and no problems to date, but since reading your comment, I WILL BE REPLACING IT!!! I checked the FCP Groten sight for the fluid and they did nhot list it (or I couldn't find it). Any other suggestions for sources? Actually I had found your sight earlier via a forum search and it is what convinced me this was easily within my skill set. I found on a different forum that the dampener can be removed without the special tool if you are using air tools (which I will be). Do you know the nut size for the damper pully? I thought I saw some where it was 34mm, and wanted to make sure I had the right tool before starting the project.

        Hi Jerry:

        fcpgroton does sell CHF-11S at I think $15 a quart + shipping. You have to either email or call them as it isn't on the website.

        I don't have any experience with taking off the nut on the damper pulley so I can't really comment. Needless to say, you want to make sure you don't rotate it :)

        There are timing marks on both the cams and the crank pulley. Cam marker are pretty obvious but the cam marks and cam belt cover's alignment marks are about 0.5-1 inch apart (don't recall right now). So dead on alignment here still looks ever so slightly off. The crank markers are tricker. Make sure you look at that and learn how to line it up before hand in case any of the gears rotate ever so slightly while the belt is off (Cams have valve lobes that tend to put a little rotational pressure on it)

        The cams rotate at a 2X rate compared to the crank. So after I put the belt on, I just rotate the crank ever so slightly forward and backward to check the timing marks to make sure I wasn't off by a tooth. The cam marks will move at 2X rate with 1X rate movement on the crank. I do read about people missing one tooth here and there. From what I've read, off by 1 tooth doesn't appear to cause the interference valves to impact the piston. You do get an engine error code tho.

    Good list. The weak spot for the engine is the early manual tensioner for the timing belt, replace it with the belt. Check the rollers for the T belt and S belt for play. Remember, this is supposed to go to 200K miles.
    Water pump should be just fine. "PCV" system cannot be "blown out", so don't bother. Using synthetic engine oil helps it stay clean.
    Replace the oil filler cap seal. Get a new O ring for the oil dipstick. The cabin filter should be changed annually.

    Because you don't drive much, consider getting a tire pressure monitoring system at your next new tire rotation. Good ones tell you temp and pressure for each wheel and cost around $250 - fun and useful toy.
