Pirelli P6 vs Michelin Pilot Exalto--which is best? V70-XC70 2004

Am looking at the two above tires for my sister's 2.5 turbo, 235-45-17. Which is best? She is 74, wants a nice quiet, comfortable ride with good driveability. Weather conditions in Lewiston, Idaho, are not extreme, but the car came with a set of Blizzacks which she will need for about two months out of the year. Both are priced about the same. The Pirellis I believe come with a 55K warranty, the Michelins with a 45. The car currently has a set of P6's on it which are worn out. Opinions, please. Dick

Hey Rich,

I can't comment on either of the above tires, but another tire in the price range that is outstanding is the Nokian WR. They have great all round traction and pass the certification needed for dedicated snow tires. However, they are all season. They are available in the 235/45/17 size you mention. IMO, one of the best tires on the market. Here is a link:

They also have a higher performance version of the same tire, called the WR G2, but I think the WR would do just fine.

I have these on my 740 wagon. They are outstanding in every condition. Not a race tire, but excellent for most people. Sorry for adding another tire to the mix.

Cheers, Jon 'Uncle Olaf'

I have a '94 850 with Pilot Exalto A/S's on it. I love the tires. So far, so good. Fantastic wet condition driving. I live in Fl. They stick to the road on dry, sunny days.

I've never run P6's, but I'm on my second set of Pilot Exalto A/S on my V90. Excellent wet/dry traction, work great in the snow (probably not as good as a Blizzak, but good for an all-season tire), smooth, quiet, responsive, and got me about 50K miles on my first set. I run stock 195-65R15, so I don't know how ride and response would change for 45 or 50-series.

Pilot Exalto AS, hands down. Quiet, good grip in wet and dry...

My 2001 V70 T5 came with the P6 tires 235-45-17 and they lasted 55,000 miles. I went with Kumho Estsa AST's the next round and liked them, but they only lasted 35,000. Can't comment on the Michelins, but have had good success with them in the past on other cars. Tire Rack is a good source of info, but be careful of the bad comments, as for every bad comment there were lots of other satisfied customers who didn't take the time to write (like me). I now deal only with America's Tire company, as they have gone well beyond what is expected to please me as a customer. They will also match any price you can find such as Tire Rack. Just bring in a print out, they'll add the cost to mount and balance (typically $80-$100) which you'd have to pay either way.

Good Luck

I would go with the Pilots. P6 is an older tire. Check out the TireRack website for a whole lotta info. The Bridgestone ultra high perf a/s (sorry can't remember the model) is also very good. I had two sets of the Pilot a/s (not the exalto, earlier version) and currently have the Bridgestone. Both were very good, Pilot had a bit more grip, Bridgestone lasts a whole lot longer.

Good luck.

Hi,

for more comfortable ride I would skip the 45-17 profile and look for 55-16 instead. Just moved from 50-16 over to 55-16 and one feels the difference.

Only if you drive a sport car fast you benefit from the extra low profile for others those are wate of money and hard to drive.

I bought a '98 S70 T5 that came with 215/45-17's on obviously non-Volvo rims. The ride completely sucks compared with what I had with my '95 850 T5. Hard to steer, harsher ride than I want.

Fortunately the OEM turbo wheels came with the car, and I'll be going to the 16's very soon.
