multiple small issues 850 1995

First issue - Front Driver Side Wiper Arm when in use and coming up the window lifts off the window with about 4" to 5" remaining to clear. Why is this happening? How to fix?

Second issue - rear backup lights stopped working, but dash light does not indicate them being out. Check bulbs and they are in working order. What could be causing this to happen? How to fix?

Third issue - Evap Canister Error code 315. Comes spuratically from time to time. How to resolve this besides keep clearing the error codes at the A/B switch in engine compartment.

Fourth issue - just changed the temp sensor in the air box, now it seems that the engine is getting plenty of clean air now, seems peppier of a ride, but fuel economy went back down by about 4 miles to the gallon. Why? How to resolve this issue? How to know if the temp unit is actually working in the air box?

Look forward to the replies, Thanks.

850 Wiper Arm 850 1995

#1. Bending the arm helps, but the fix that is to grind down the stops on the hinge. http://www.brickboard.com/GALLERY/volvopic.htm?id=2601

I've done the "lean on it" method of bending the arm back down, but that's a temporary fix. The method above consists of grinding down the little ears on the underside of the arm (circled in the picture). This allows the arm to bend a bit further increasing the contact with the windshield. I haven't had any troubles with it since I did this more than a year ago.

If you remove the arm, brush the metal shavings off of the little splined stub on the wiper motor and be careful not to rotate the arm too much on the splines. The metal is soft and prone to stripping loose from the motor shaft. Then the wiper just flops around. Not fun in a rain/snowstorm.

For the wiper you need to make sure the nut is tight. If it is you just need to bend it. Details are here (They call it a temporary repair but it has been temporary on my cars for several years):

http://volvospeed.com/wiperarm.php

The reverse lights are likely getting ready to be a bigger problem, the PNP switch. Try "rowing" the shifter back and forth from low to park 15 or 20 times in quick succession. As it gets worse you will start to get the flashing up arrow on the instrument cluster and the transmission will go into limp mode. Rowing the shifter back and forth will sometimes clean the contacts on the switch.

For the EVAP error check the lines from the fuel tank to the cannister and also from the cannister to the purge valve. Another common problem is a leaky seal on the gas cap.

The best fix for the airbox thermostat is to throw it away and find something to jamb the flapper door to the cold air side it will never cause a problem again. That said, when the car is hot, remove the air filter and look at the flapper door - it should be directing air fully from the cold air side.

The wiper arm thing is a common annoyance. Even replacement arms do this after a year or so. Don't try the 'bend the wiper arm ' thing when it's really cold, because it's much worse driving with a snapped-off wiper arm in the snow!
