As Klaus already knows, I recently purchased a 99 V70 T5 with a manual transmission, and have been loving it for a month. Yesterday, during the first rain this car has seen in my possession, I was driving on a surface street, doing about 40 mph, slightly downhill. I didn't notice at first, because the car was in gear, but eventually I realized when I pressed the gas, nothing happened. I immediately take the car out of gear and the engine totally dies. As I coast down the hill, I'm struggling with no power steering or power brakes, while at the same time trying to get the car over to the side of the road, as well as attempting to restart it mid roll. It was an interesting experience, and luckily I got over safely.
I sat for a while, attempting to restart, trying various reset techniques. I even had my OBD II scanner with me, but the computer didn't fire any error codes during the ordeal. I was eventually left with the ability to freely turn the engine over, but with no hint of catching, not even after sitting for a while. I'm partially relieved because at first I feared timing belt, which is still an unknown on this car, but after turning over without grinding I'm confident it's not that. It just appears it's getting no fuel or spark (I have half a tank of gas).
I suspect it's got to be some sensor somewhere, but I have much less experience with these more modern Volvo's. Does anyone have an idea what type of failure could kill the engine mid-drive?

OK. I know that this is simplistic, but it should always be Step One of any diagnosis.
Have you checked all the fuses??

Dave,
You were right on with the fuse suggestion. It didn't occur to me until later, but I found that number #4 was blown, which is for the ignition coil. So I started digging around and found that some of the wire insulation had rubbed off under the coil cover, and one of the wires had actually shorted, blowing the fuse!
For now I've put insulation around all the cracked and rubbed off stuff I could find, replaced the fuse, and the car works fine now. Easy fix!
The real question is, should I leave my ad-hoc fix, or replace some of these parts just to be safe, and if so, which parts?
Thanks to all for the helpful suggestions. I thought I had left typical Volvo wiring problems behind me with the 240 series, but apparently not!

HI drj.
When this happened to me ealier this year (97 AWD V70), it simply turned out to be lack of fuel. the gauge was showing eight galls. but the sender unit had stuck! With having had flu for about ten days, and my wife driving the car, I had lost that instictive 'feel' for fuel usage and the tank was empty!!
Interestingly a local trip boat skipper had to give sixtyodd people their money back the other day because the engine would not start, despite him filling the 100 gall. tanks the previous night, it turned out that the all electronic super automatic fuel pump had run out of fuel, but continued to 'serve' him and charge his account. He had lost his fuel dipstick.
I offer you the information.
Best regards.

I'm pretty sure it isn't a fuel in the tank issue, unless my gauge is broken and someone syphoned gas (definitely possible these days). I religiously reset my trip odometer, and it confirms I should be at half a tank.

Ah yes, isn't that a great feeling when all of the sudden the the throttle pedal ceases to do anything? Sure adds an element of excitementand anticipation to any drive. Has happened to me many times (too many). My first reaction is to depress the clutch pedal and try to rev the engine. Wait too long and the engine will stop. As you experienced the result is a lack of power steering and brakes. This is nice when you're on the highway in the left lane because the car doesn't slow down as fast - allowing some more time to coast to the side of the road. Leave the car in gear and you'll slow down faster, but since the engine is still turning you'll still have power brakes and steering.
I've always attributed the problem to fuel. At least with my OBD I car ('95 854 NA 5-speed). The computer should have tripped a code for an ignition or sensor signal problem. Did the car eventually restart? Mine would restart after sitting for 5-10 minutes.
The last time my car had this problem I replaced the fuel filter after which the problem disappeared (it had been happening more and more frequently up to every time I drove the car). After seeing the greyness that came out of the filter after 150K miles, I'd recommend a fuel filter change out for any 850/S/V70 with more than 100K miles. Other suspects are the pump relay, the pump, or the fuel pressure regulator.

It was a surprising experience, but luckily I was in a place where I only had to go over one lane to find the shoulder.
I was also surprised there was no error code. I scanned it several times, after attempting to restart the car after 10 min, then later after about 30 min. Still no code, still no go.
Could a fuel filter clog really cut the engine out so cleanly? I would have expected it to make things sluggish first, like running out of gas.

my 850 did the same thing you describe a while ago. my ignition coil had failed. it popped no codes and i spent a day testing everything i could think of. the second day i tried the coil,... dead. hope you get her running again soon.
good luck!

This is an excellent suggestion, thanks. I especially like the fact your failure didn't fire any codes. I may have become overly dependent on that check engine light and my scanner, but having a car that won't start without any error codes seems strange. I'll be sure check the coil.

Ohh, it never restarted. That does sounds electrical. Can you hear the pump running with the ignition on position II?
I jump straight to fuel because that has been my experience - YMMV.
