screeching V70 V70-XC70 1998

Popular opinion says the motor is shot. Haven't taken it to a official mechanic, but the mechanic where I work is about 80% sure that it's a crank case bearing, or in other words, an engine re-build or replacement. 1998 V70 AWD turbo it is. And it has other problems like decaying oil coolant lines, and a mashed in passenger door where I backed into a truck in a snowstorm....but two new wheel bearings, functioning locks, lights, pumps etc.

I also own a 98 non-turbo, non AWD, which is in good shape, and which I bought for $3500 once the AWD started screaming. Now I'm not sure what to do with the turbo model. It's just sitting in the parking lot. Logic tells me to have it towed home (hurray for AAA premium), and strip it for parts. Or jack it up as a nice lawn ornament.

I don't do my own repairs, but could probably take off and store the easy to get to parts. Would like to know what you others would do in my shoes?

I'll take the turbo. What color are the seats? Do the seat heaters work?
Contact Erie VoVo. They cover NE US.

sorry: seats are mint: I'm keeping them.. Changed my mind about donating the though, and will be towing it to my house today. Time to break out the socket set and start scouring this forum as to "how to". Will let you know about the turbo..

I,m not really serious about the turbo. I just ordered one from Erie. I just transplanted the engine in my S70, and I'll bet your engine failed from oil circulation problems as did mine. Mine showed up as turbo seal/bearing failure, and I killed all flying insects on I-80 just west of the Delaware Water Gap. I estimate I pumped 3 quarts of oil into the exhaust system while I was trying to get to the next exit.
If you pull the valve cover (top of the engine) you will probably find gobs of gunk in the oil passages.
I'll send pictures when I get a chance.
        Good luck.

A non-mechanically inclined person has an AWD with a blown engine, oil leaks, and body damage. Plus he has a FWD car that runs for now.

You have a very expensive lawn ornament. Unless you have good friends that are also shade tree mechanics, your AWD is toast. It needs an engine, plus other parts, which will need about $3K to get moving again. If the mileage is over 150K, then it is not worth the effort. Part it out or call junk yards.

Don't let this happen to the FWD car. Keep up on the maintenance and it will run for a very long time.

Good advice. Question is whether I should strip it for parts for the FWD?

Other than the radio and dash switches, you are going to need tools, floor jack, and jack stands.
Oh, the engine computers would be nice for someone wanting to upgrade to a better chip.

A fellow member in NC would sure like the O2 sensors and the CAT...
