preference 2000 or 2004? C70

http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/index.htm?id=1296594&nr_no=1

Any design changes that makes one year better then the other?

My brother is shopping for a C70. just likes the way t looks and is asking for input. How's the engine? The cars he's looking at have 50-70K miles. any turbo concerns?

Are the engines identical? Is this engine the same as the other AWD volvos?
Any Trani issues?

I read through the very few Posts on the C70 ...there's not much to go on.
ANY comments would be welcome

Given a choice of the 2 below, I would go with the 2004:

    For $6K difference?

I was looking for a C70 earlier this year (before a free 244 landed in my lap).

I wasn't considering one so new as a 2004, so I don't know how they differ. The C70 is an outlier in the Volvo stable, so many of the problems are related to things that are unlike the S/V70. I read that part of the design was contracted out to Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR) in England. Most of what I gathered about them centered around problems with the rear window regulators amd the power conv. top. The windows have no frames, so presumably the regulator design is different than the "regular" models. So a new design coupled with the fact that the windows get used a whole lot means that they are known to fail. The convertible tops give people fits because... well because it's a power convertible top and like anything else, it will eventually get messed up or fail. There are diagnostic codes just for the top. Sometimes they will get set off even though there is nothing wrong.

The other common complaint was about "scuttle shake". The convertible chassis is inherently weaker (less stiff) than a coupe, so some annoying movements are observed during cornering, over big bumps and heavy acceleration. There are aftermarket braces that reduce this. My answer to that was to try for a LPT model with less power and smaller wheels instead of the HPT one with gobs of power, stiff suspension and 17" wheels with no compliance.

Again, this is all just stuff I've read and now regurgitated from memory, YMMV. After doing all the research I was a little put off, but then I realized that most (if not all) of the problems are the exact same problems that every other power top convertible cars have. Just find one you like, make extra sure everything works, look for service history, and enjoy.

    Best of luck,
    Will

Will, Thanks for your reply. I sent your comments to my brother. Here's his quick comments after looking at the c70's he was intersted in.

"I think I'll pass on both Volvos. I guess at years old I would expect it to seem fairly new and not like some drove it all the time with maple syrup on their hands. Or smelling like they left the top down every time it rained.

Windows didn't roll down, buttons missing bateries dead, top not nesting properly. Is this what eBay sellers call cream puffs?"

"This guy, Will, was right. Windows weird vibrations and so many moving parts.
Why can't they just make a manual top. No Motors."
      Thanks again

HA! Isn't that something. Well, if nothing else, your brother now has first hand knowledge about what to look out for...

A manual top makes a lot of sense once the car has seen a few years. There just aren't any out there save for small two seaters (Miata, MR Spyder). A manual top on a bigger four seat car gets tough. Grandma's got to be able to do it. My only thought on that is to go with a Saab or (gasp) VW only because, powered or not, they've been doing convertibles for so long that surely they've gotten it figured out.

Thanks for the regurgitation. I don't mind info coming to me second hand/mouth.

Info like this will help point my brother look at these cars more educated.
