850 Tranny swap - Any other years fit a 93? 850 1993

Sadly, the tranny is toast on my nice, low mileage 93.

I am weighing my options and have not decided what to do yet. Might just buy another car...

Am I correct that only a 93 tranny will work in my car? Swapping in a later year tranny is certainly the cheapest route to go as my mechanic is willing to swap them pretty reasonably (about $500 labor).

Anybody know where I can get a good, used tranny that doesn't cost a fortune?

Did you try RCSR in CA 850 1993

Jim,

I have not bought parts for quite a few years but try Rancho Cordova Specialized Recyclers. Not sure if their volvo line is same, 800-700-volv.

Never checked their site but here it is, www.rcsr.com.

Original transmission (driving gently since I got it at 90k). Recycling fluid every 20k or so or when ever shift is rough.

I am in the same boat as you. i have learned that a 93 transmission is the last mosel year you want in there. What I have heard is that any year will trans will fit. but I have heard something about having to change the trans cooler lines to the radiator. I have removed two of these transmissions now and nothing looks different about the lines. Somebody feel free to chime in there. i did get lucky and find a freshly wrecked part out on craigslist got the tranny for 70. heat wave is keeping me from install.

according to the Volvo parts cat, 93 is a one year only, with multiple parts required when replacing. a 94-95 should phisically fit but Im not sure about the electronics.

Thanks for the info!

Yeah, the 93 tranny's are a known weak point. Fortunely, I bought my car pretty cheaply and have only put tires and rear brakes into it so it is not the end of the world...

Did you really get a tranny off Craig's list for $70 or was it more like $700?

For 90.00 the guy let me have the transmission, a perfect dash cover, and thenifty arm rest with the front and rear cupholders. i had to remove all of the parts myself in the blazing heat but well worth it.
