How to replace steering wheel release lever S70

Hi All,

Fun week-end replacing the steering wheel adjuster lever and LF door check strap.

Here is the info for the adjuster lever.

You don't need to remove the steering wheel, airbag, etc. But, disconnect the battery to be safe.

1. Remove the soundproofing panel.
2. Remover the knee-bolster (4 nuts-13mm and 4 bolts-12mm).
3. Remove the lower shroud by taking out the 3 screws underneath (Torx 25).
4. Remove the combo TS switch, it will make the job go easier.

Now the fun begins:

There are two (2) long threaded bolts that go through the upper steering column frame to support it.

Sit on the ground with you lower back against the doorsill.

Lean back, turn your neck to the right, look up--lean farther back and turn until you misalign one or more vertebrae--and you will see the heads of two (2) 14mm black frame bolts located up near the bottom of the lower dashboard top.

The one farthest from you and closest to the firewall is accessed through a hole in the support to its left either with a deep socket or short extension on a regular socket.

The one nearer to you is accessed with a standard socket.

Once the bolts are removed you can pull the assembly down and forward about 2 inches.

5. Remove the broken lever.
6. Note that the repair lever comes with a metal crimp ring to fortify it.
7. Place the ring on the lever.
8. Line up the tabs and push the lever on until it clicks in place.
9. Locate the ring so that is straddles the plastic tabs, the metal adjuster assembly and the plastic handle sleeve.
10. Crimp.
11. Re-install the long bolts w/14mm head and torque to spec.
12. Re-install the knee bolster.
13. Torque the nuts and bolts to spec.
14. Re-install the combo TS switch.
15. Re-install the lower shroud.
16. Do NOT over tighten the screws or you will shatter the mounts.
17. Snap the upper shroud in place making sure that the switch seals are in the grooves.
18. Re-install the soundproofing panel.
19. See your chiropractor for an adjustment.
