serpentine belt getting chewed up 850 1994

I have replaced the serpentine belt tensioner, idler pulley and sepr. belt when I did the water pump/timing belt this winter. Then the alternator went in March and I replaced that. I was recharging the ac system and I noticed that the sepentine belt ridges were getting worn/damaged. Has anybody run across this problem. A Volvo mechanic said that it is possible that the crank pulley gets a nife edge with hi mileage (car has 197,000 miles) and wears the belt. The particles that have come off the belt are getting deposited just under the power steering pulley so that may be doing the damage. I will take off belt this weekend to inspect.
Thanks for any help.

Make sure the belt is centered on (all) the pulleys.

My guess is the new alternator alignment is off by a hair, causing the belt to touch the outside edge of the PS pulley.
If the S belt breaks, it could get caught by the T belt causing the engine to crash. Be very careful.

Thanks for info, I am at work and car is home, I will check tomorrow. I will get new belt, what are my options on aligning the alternator?

I just took a look at my 1998, there is a 1mm gap between the belt and outside edges of the water pump and alternator pulleys. If you moved the PS pump to get the alternator out, you may have misaligned it.
The mechanic fibbed about getting a knife edge on the pulleys, the belt doesn't touch the top portion of the pulley, so it cannot wear it down.

Either something is misaligned or your belt is the wrong size.
