throttle fully open at idle 850 1996

When I start my wife's 850 the engine revs to redline at idle. I looked under the hood and see the hose from the air filter to the throttle body has big holes in it, would this cause a stuck open throttle?

The throttle cable also feels loose when not engaged, should the cable feed over the circular cam/pulley or under it?

Thanks in advance

In addition to what the other's have said: If you need a Temporary fix until you get a new intake tube, you could try wrapping the hose with tape to cover the holes. I say cover, not seal, because it is definitely a temporary fix. It will only get worse, then need more tape, then when you remove it to add more tape, more holes appear and the others get bigger. Is there any more information here that we are missing?

We presume that this car was running fine until, all of a sudden, one day, it started to rev on startup and you noticed the holes in the intake hose.

Did the car sit for an extended period and possibly mice made those holes and have nested near the throttle butterfly?

Did you just purchase this car and you are attempting to start it for the first time?

Did someone try and work on this car and left the throttle cable off of its guide pulley?

I am asking these questions because your specific set of symptoms is not consistent with a normally functioning car--something else had to have happened here that your initial question did not reveal.

Thanks for input - here's more details.

Car has been running fine on a daily basis. Actually, the problem started while driving on the roads. Suddenly started accelerating when my wife was driving it, throttle fully opened without any pressure on the gas pedal.

Car has not sat, stored in garage overnight. Daily commuter (10mile drive through city)

With the intake hose removed I started it up and pumped the gas pedal, I can see the throttle cable/pulley working ok, also the butterfly valve at the air intake point. But it would still go mad and rev to redline with no input to gas pedal.

Very scary.

You have a gross air leak into the intake manifold. Check the vacuum lines that go into the manifold, especially the one on the passenger side.
Pull the aluminum cover off the injector rail and check each injector to make sure the base is sealed tightly. One loose injector can cause this problem.

The cable feeds over the cam.
Sounds like your butterfly valve is wide open. Remove the air hose to the throttle body, you will need a new one anyway, and find out why the air supply is open. It sounds like the linkage is all screwed up if the cable came loose.
