06 XC 70 handling, braking, and gas mileage (500 mile trip today) V70-XC70

Wow, what a day, nearly 500 miles from W-S North Carolina to Tiffin Ohio. Based on fuel averaging, the MPG rating was 25.8MPG, not bad for a very heavy AWD vehicle with two people, one 80 pound Boxer pup, and 50 pounds of gear!

The first challenge was a massive sudden backup on the WVA turnpike while coming out of a near blind turn, I applied the brakes in moderation (not used to ABS quite yet), but realized that if I didn't do something the guy in front of us in his black Camry (while on the cell phone) would be toast if we hit him. A quick check of the right side mirror said all is clear, ie. drift right and gain 10 car lengths to the semi in the outside lane. No problem whatsoever to that point anyway, then I looked in the center rear view mirror and saw two big pickup trucks coming at us from behind at way too fast of a speed! I finally veered to the outside berm and into the grass to avoid the crash from behind. Final tally was a trashed F150, an accordion of a Camry, a C2500 PU that needed a flat bed, a semi trailer with wrinkled rear doors, and an XC-70 with muddy wheels!

I'm not trying to call the XC-70 an awesome handling car, but dang, this is the second time I've asked the impossible of it and she responded with a "give me more attitude!"

Finally, driving through Columbus, OH simply sucked, ie. highly aggressive drivers without a care in the world as long as their cell is plastered to their ear! If they weren't on the phone, they were trying to "gain pole position" on the freeway! I guess they could use a bit of Southern Driving etiquette!

In closing, 25.8MPG for a heavy XC ain't bad especially on 87 octane. The handling is highly deceptive due to its "softness", but I am now learning what she is capable of... I'm thinking that a bit of track time is in order to find the true limits!

06 XC 70 trip - I know where there are far worse drivers V70-XC70

Great trip report, glad you are OK. That's the important thing. Odd observation about Ohio drivers because I have found them to be well-mannered for the most part. If you want to meet aggressive drivers, try New Orleans: Large SUVs driven by young males or distracted suburban fraus and lots of BMWs, Mercedes, tricked-out pickup trucks, Jaguars, Ferraris. Mind you, this is the "poor" city. No sign that gasoline prices are affecting driving habits there!

As for your gasoline mileage, isn't the XC designed for 91 octane? I suggest using alternate fillups with 89 and 93, where the average would be about 91. This should improve your mileage a bit. During a recent 1000+-mile trip in a 1999 V70 using 93 octane, we achieved about 30 mpg.

Off roading in an XC! Nice to see someone else looking in their rearview mirror, because it is there for that reason.
If you want better gas mileage, maintain it with 89 octane, not "regular", and you will get 2-4mpg better. 89 octane is only 10 cents or $1.80 more per full tank.
As for Columbus drivers, I find them pretty lame after Chicago and the NYC area :)

My experiences with our 2002 XC have been similar. While not a cornering Lotus race car, it handles very well, deceptively. I have added the Turbo Strut Brace, and it made a definite improvement.

On octane, I have very good luck with 89. 87 does not work as well and gets worse gas mileage. We use our XC for only about 10% of our driving though. Mostly I drive to/from the light rail (5 miles each way each day). We also use it to carry large items from Home Depot. And lastly to tow our pop-up tent camper. When towing (about 3,000 lbs) I find it will knock some if I do not use premium.

The other 90% of our driving is with our Toyota Prius we bought 3 months ago. We get 51 MPG overall with that. Really wish Volvo made a hybrid.

      Klaus,

As always your responses are greatly appreciated! I will give the 89 octane a shot and see what happens mileage wise. I know on the boosted Eclipse, if I run it on 87, I have to back to boost down to 8PSI to prevent knocking and it is dog slow. Go to 93 Octane, no knock, boost gets cranked up to 14PSI, it goes like stink and the MPG hop up by 5 (assuming I don't "use" that extra power)!
