Strange click from fuel rail V70-XC70 1999

I recently test drove a 1999 V70 T5, and while the engine was idling, I went out to take a listen with the hood up. What I heard was a pretty loud clicking (although I couldn't hear it with the hood closed). However, the clicking was NOT coming from the valve cover like you might think, it was clearly coming from the aluminum fuel rail that is just in front of valve cover and just on top of the intake manifold. I was able to confirm this by putting my fingers on the rail itself, and very clearly feeling a knock resonating through the rail. It was almost as if someone were tapping on the rail with a small hammer in time with the engine. When I put my hand on the intake manifold and the valve cover, I felt no such clicking.

Is this click normal for a turbo V70? I have no idea what, inside the fuel rail, could cause this pronounced click, but it makes me worried. Any ideas?

Fuel injectors, 5 of them, all click. Probably not THAT loud, but audible.

Thanks Klaus. My 850 NA has no where near that amount of noise on its rail, so thats why I flagged it. I don't have a lot of other comparables though.

I'm just trying to find excuses to walk away from this car. 99 V70 T5, 5 speed, 116K, in wonderful condition as far as I can tell, but it was purchased at an auction to be resold. Clean title though. I just can bear to think of such a rare beauty in the hands of another even though I don't need it. I've lusted after a manual turbo wagon for years.

        A T5 with a manual? WOW!
Some dealers automatically send cars to auction if the odo is greater than 100K. But you need to find the previous owner, if possible and verify problems. At least, the selling brokers should know where it was traded in and you can find out from the local dealer what the maint hist was.

Injectors should not be very loud. But you could have all 5 professionally cleaned and tested at http://www.cruzinperformance.com/ and then put new O rings on them.

        Just buy it!

Damn Klaus, I know you're right. It's a 1 in a million. What's worse, is that they're only asking $5300 for it, which is so low I'm suspicious.

As for tracking down the previous owners, that seems like a tall order. I'd have to get this broker to give me the information from the auction, then from the auction track down the dealership. That seems like a trail impossible to follow.

Just give the guy $5K and tell your wife later :-) Expect to put in another $1K to get it running correctly.
            Check the timing belt sticker...

OK I did the dirty deed this morning, with the wife's approval of course. I about killed myself coming home. Going from a 5spd NA to the turbo is quite a change, and I had to relearn moderation. Seems like a sound car though, very clean and tight.

I can't find the timing belt sticker, but I may be able to track down the previous owner. I'm pretty inclined to blindly replace the belt either way. Is it a 100K increment on the V70, or still 70K?

Besides the basic oil/filters/plugs changeout, what else would people recommend I do to the V70? I'm new to owning turbos.

Except for the turbo wanting synthetic oil, treat it like an N/A. The timing belt and tensioner should already have been replaced, it is 105K interval. The tensioner is manual and set with ambient temperature. Check the fuel filter and replace it if it hasn't been done yet.
Check the single prong plugs for wear, check the tire pressure, and just have fun!!! Smile when you get the gears to snick into place without jerking the passengers head off :)
