Propane conversion? V70-XC70

Has anyone done (or know of) a propane conversion on a V70? It's been done in the UK, and propane is costing much less than gas in Canada, so I'm investigating doing a 1998 V70.

Here's a link to the manufacturer of a propane coversion system that has been installed on Volvos at least in Europe :

There are installers in North America. I was quoted $4500 for a turnkey installation and expect I would save about 50% of my fuel cost.

I was so hoping to see some discussion on this topic, propane or natural gas are some what viable options, So many more options in Europe, like diesel, propane, natural gas and gas/propane vehicles. With gasoline fast approaching $1.50 per ltr in Ontario, ??????

      Propane conversion? V70-XC70

VERY viable, indeed. CNG is a great 'middle' technology. Just not in our cars.

Why not buy the new Civic GX? It's EPA legal, no worries with emission laws, etc.

In the US, it's illegal to convert any car over, even partially, to run on any other fuel type than it was intended for. I looked into this extensively. The only approved kits (again, this is US) are the carburated kits for older cars. There is no legal EFI conversion NOR any legal add-on in the US and probably in Canada. Not sure, though, how you guys deal with these things up north. I hope you find something but the european manufacturers won't sell to us (generally) and the guys who will are selling used tanks (the tank is the big cost...solenoids, valves, and programming are cheap) that aren't always safe.

Keep us posted (maybe under a pseudonym) if it works out for you! Better to start with a natural gas car from a fleet (dodge made a ton of trucks/vans and Honda has made a CNG civic for years now) and put the extra money you'd save into the PHILL system, so you can refuel at home overnight!

        Propane conversion? V70-XC70

There are many conversions being done in Canada. I know of whole taxi fleets running on propane. The guy doing the conversions is around the corner from me (only works on Crown Victorias and pickups though). I have a buddy who had his pickup converted to CNG. However there aren't many filling stations selling natural gas; propane is much more readily available. Filling up with natural gas at home sounds interesting, but I understand it can take 8 hours. Demand for propane has been fairly stable, hence the price. Natural gas is widely used for home heating and the market forces acting on it are completely different than those affecting propane. Who knows where the NG price is going.

8 hour fillup doesn't sound bad...do you not sleep? :)

I live in a fairly small city in Pennsylvania...we've got a quick-fill CNG station within 5 miles of my home and work. You can fill up at agricultural supply if they'll agree to it...standard hookups.

It sounds like you'd be converting, though, so why not do a dual-fuel setup (since it might be legal in Canada)? Keep a reserve tank of petrol, run the timing and injector pulses on an adjustable box or aftermarket ecu (like MegaSquirt-n-Spark) and switch over 'on-demand'. That's the way I'd do a conversion but the costs are $$$$$.

Best of luck! I'd love to see it when it's done.
