Gasket needed or just o-ring where oil cooler meets pan? 850

I replaced the rectangular o-ring where my oil cooler return/thermostat (?) meet the oil pan. I'm sure things are seated, but it still leaks like crazy. (At least I think it's this leaking--decent puddle in 15 sec.) Screws are down nice and firmly. Lines are clamped all the way in. Should I have added the sealant like I used on the pan-to-block?

Just an o ring. It's easy to pinch the o ring during install

Agree, but I've done this 3 times now.... 850

...each with the same sort of leak. I"m sure the o-ring is seated, and held by the little bumps in the groove. I'm getting a pretty good size puddle in 10-15 sec, so it must be under pressure, right? I don't think the oil pan/block seal could do that.

Maybe I'll try reusing the old o-ring.

Are you sure that the leak isn't coming from the two oil cooler lines that go into the thermostat? They have O rings too. Mine started leaking when I had the pan off to replace the O rings that were causing lifter noise. I got the two oil cooler line O rings and that stopped the leak.
