Tailgate rattle V70-XC70 2000

Now that I've fixed the loose tail gate panel and replaced the shocks in the tail gate itself, I notice a rattle from the tail gate latch while driving.

I took a close look and noticed some worn out tape or plastic around the metal latch. Is there a part that needs replacing here or was this the previous owners attempt to reduce the tail gate rattle?

Is the tape on the part that attaches to the bumper? If so, take the tape off and move the part 1/8 inch closer to the front of the car. Do NOT slide the catch forward too much or the strain will break the latch mechanism.

The tape is on the stricker which is mounted to the rear floor of the wagon. I will look as see if this is adjustable.

I just replaced the rear pressurized shocks in the tailgate. I guess the old shocks didn't do much and weight of the tailgate itself keep the latch from rattling. Now that the tailgate is much lighter, I get a lot more rattle from it.

On either side of the striker is a single T40 screw. You do not have to remove any plastic. The screws are just visible.
Becareful not to move the striker too much. Just enough to stop the rattling.

Tailgate rattle - I had the same broken plastic V70-XC70 2000

If you are referring to a molded plastic piece that once covered the metal latch mechanism (the part in the tailgate, not the part on the car body), the same broke on my 1990 V70. The bad news: the repair is expensive; you have to buy the entire lock and electric actuator, > $175 (at least, that's what the local Volvo dealer said). The good news: not a safety problem or weakness. On my car, the tailgate is harder to close. We have to hold with both hands and firmly thump it into place. One hand slam does not work because then the tailgate bounces a bit and the latch does not engage completely. So, no good solution.
