Which FWD to buy?

Hi BB

I've not been on in years. After years of owning X40's I'm thinking of changing to new volvo's fwd. My 93 940 was rear ended recently and I need to get another car soon. I've been looking around and am leaning towards to s70. What years to avoid and what repairs to expect with mileage at 100K or at 150k.

I really miss the 940's but they are so hard to get in decent condition. Some are priced as much as the s70's.

Thanks
haroon

Which FWD to buy? - BEST CONDITION POSSIBLE

The other gent, Calvin, was right. Likely upcoming repairs for any car >100,000 miles old will depend on the maintenance and care it received early in its life. One car will be great and another will be trash. Most people simply don't do maintenance. I suggest you not worry about model year or mileage but concentrate on condition. Good luck finding a nice one. If you are really, really lucky, you might find a manual transmission V70 or S70.

Which FWD to buy? S70

The S70 was made in 98, 99, 00.

In the 99 MY, the electonic throttle was introduced to replace the mechanical throttle. Volvo had some trouble getting the ETM to work right. Make sure all the recalls are done if you get one of these (99 or 00).

I own a 98 S70 and an 00 V70 and I haven't had much trouble out of either one of them. Despite the relatively high mileage on the S70 (170K versus 96K on the V70) I enjoy driving the S70 more. I can't put my finger on the difference but I suspect it's the mechanical throttle. Neither of them are turbo charged so the mechanicals are nearly identical otherwise.

Where are you located? There are a couple of 940s for sale in the Knoxville Tenn area that "look" pretty good if you are interested in information on them, let me know.

Expected repairs on 100k - 150K, other than scheduled maintenance, is very dependent on the previous care the vehicle has received. Except, perhaps the ABS. If the ABS on an S70 hasn't failed yet - it will - usually somewhere after 60K - 80K. Get it fixed by Victor Rocha (search the board for his contact info).

Good luck!

Calvin
