850 AC bangs when turned on 850 1996

My AC makes a horrible clunk when turned on the first time after setting in the hot sun all day. It feels like someone hit my car with a bat. The AC does not cool very well and I have had problems with the serpentine belt slipping when the underside gets wet.

Any ideas? Please help.

Scott

Maybe take the belt off and make sure everythings mounted securly. The sudden drag from the compressor may cause a loose item to jump slightly.

Do you ad your own r134a? Sometime when over charged, that will happen. At least the noisy part.
If your belt slips, how old is the Sbelt? Is it cracked?

I did attempt to charge the system last year so definately could have caused a problem there. I've done some major repairs on this vehicle but for some reason could not quite figure that operation out.

The belt has about 30,000 miles. Someone at work suggested the belt tensioner- any way to determine if it's bad? I get a groaning noise when turning when I first start driving so I'm fairly certain it is slipping.

Thanks for you input.

Scott

Charging an AC is not hard if you have a pressure guage. You are in a hot climate, so you need less r134a. Heat causes it to expand and if overfull, it has no room to expand further causing less cooling.
With the pressure guage attached and at around 2,000 rpm, the pressure should be at 45lbs with the compressor disengaged and around 30 with it engaged. If the clutch rapidly turns off and on, it is usually because the system is under pressured.
If over pressured, just use a long handled philips screwdriver and let a little coolant out until the vents get cold. Don't tell the EPA you are doing this.

The power steering fluid needs to be flushed if the pump is making noise. Less than 1 quart of tranny fluid will do it.

The S belt should be good for at least 50K miles, most last for 70K.

If there is a screetching noise at start up, use a stick held against your ear and the other end on a suspect part. It works like a stethoscope. Just watch out for the moving belt. When you place the stick on the offending part you will hear it quite well.
