Messed up climate control unit (automatic) 850

Hello All,
I'm at my wits end. Just last week my ac went on the fritz. After checking the electrical connections, it was determined that the electronic climate control unit was at fault. Trouble is that the local "stealership" is asking for my firstborn for a replacement unit. Any help in locating a reasonably priced unit will be greatly appreciated

Have you tried cleaning out the temp sensors up behind the grab handles. They tend to get glogged w/ dust. Remove the plastic cover and CAREFULLY clean out the opening w/ some canned air. There's a fragile thermistor located indside and a little fan assy so be carefull.

eBay! There are several there that range from $10.00 to $100.00. You can change the unit yourself in about 5 minutes.

Messed up climate control unit (automatic) 850 1995

Mine car seems to have long/always had unclearable ECC err codes, but it behaves itself nicely (ie, it's symptomless) anyway, unless 2 the cabin temp sensors by the front door grab handles (headliner) are acting up. I've had to pull them out and blow them clean twice over the car's 13 years.

Make sure it is the same year 850. I got a good backup from Strandberg auto, Wis for $200. Pay close attention to the picture on ebay. Some of them may have stored codes that will not clear. My 1995 was not a problem.

What kind of codes indicated that the unit failed?

Messed up climate control unit (automatic) 850 1994

Hello All,
Thanks for all your input. Turns out to be the control unit.Found one at a junkyard for $40 that works well.
However, I have another question; What is the exact cause that throws out a 315 code. From what I've read, it indicates a problem with the EVAP system. thanks for your answers

Glad you got a good unit for only $40. Check and clear any codes and lets hope that it stays well for a long time.

The Evap problem is usually a check valve between the evap cannister and manifold. My turbo has more than one. They are a pain to check because it is near to impossible to remove the vacuum line. Just try blowing through the reverse end, if that works you need a new check valve.
Also check the cannister for hairline cracks.
