V-70 Caliper Piston Won't Fully Retract V70-XC70 1999

Hello All,

Flurry of activity here. Now that the lawmower is again working (stuck choke cable) I went back to my 120K service on the 99 V-70.

New pads in the front went well with the right side, but on the left, it appears the caliper piston won't fully retract to enable insertion of the new pads in the limited room.

Should I just use the old inner with about 0.20" and a new outer. I'm afraid of really cranking down with the c clamp on the piston to get it to retract any further. Right now, the piston doesn't leak and it surely did move back. The reservoir cap was off btw.

Or do I need to bite the bullet and purchase a rebuilt caliper and do it right.

Thanks,

Marty Wolfson

Hi Marty.

I belive that pistons in calipers should be perfectly free to move.

Once the piston becomes rusty; it becomes a sticky problem.

In the past I used to get kits for them and recondition them on the bench. I belive that some LAND ROVER people still do, using stainless pistons.

However, recently I just went and 'bit the bullet', and paid my money to that nice man at the main agent, and restored my brakes to perfection. Cheap at any price.
Best of luck.

Howard,

I suppose I will place my order now. Thanks for the response.

However, this was the first time I got into the V-70 setup. I have a slew of 240's. The V-70 is a lot more sanitary the way things are arranged, but I suppose after 9 years, caliper contamination is inevitable.

Sounds like you go between lawnmowers and cars. Amazing that we have time for much else.

Thanks again,

Marty

Hi marty.
I still have my 92 240, dont use it now 180.000 mls, so no body wanted it at any price! Not much wrong withit,it just sits there like Stonehenge, waiting for the archaeologists to dig down to it....

Look out for the Silent strimmer in the hands of a charming neighbour,it may need a hard to get carb kit, I cant fix them with out the internet!

Best regards.
