Need to replace front seats in my '96 850 GLT: What year Volvos have similar seats? 850

Hello All,

I have a 1996 850 GLT wagon with a light tan/taupe interior. I think the interior color code is 6940. The driver and front passenger seats (they are leather covered) are tired. I'd like to replace them with seats out of donor car. Besides finding another '96 with leather seats, what other year 850s would have the same style of seats? I believe the same style of seats can be found from 1994 850 models upto 1996, but I'm not sure. Does anyone know for sure? Thanks for replies in adance.

Hugh

    1995 turbo & T5 through 1998 S/V70 for sure. The non-turbo did not have SIPS bags in 1994.
    If you go to a pick&pull, the bottom cushions are interchangable from side to side. The seat backs are unique to driver/pass side. Make sure they are power and have heat.

    The SIPS trigger is on the side of the seat, just in front of the adjusting lever/buttons. To pull the cover off, pull up on the front part of the plastic and slide it backwards. There should be a red piece of plastic which then is inserted behind the trigger button to make it safer.

      Klaus,

      When I'm removing my seats from my car, do I have to disconnect the battery first and wait half an hour? I read or was told you have to do this as a safety precaution to prevent the accidental triggering of the side impact bags in the seats. Same question if I have to pull the seats myself from a donor car.

      Finally, when I'm installing the "new" seats in my car is there any safety procedures I have to take to prevent the accidental triggering of the side impact bags. Thanks.

      Hugh

        It is a mechanical system, you do not have to disconnect the battery. That is why you should insert the plastic piece behind the impact button. You do have to unplug the electrics from the front of the seat :)
        4 bolts and out it comes. Move the steering wheel up first.

    All years will physically bolt in but your car has SIPS so you should get replacements that also have SIPS. SIPS was standard from '96 and on was available on some '95 models.

      SIPS = airbags ? 850

      Do all 850s with SIPS stamped in the rocker panel have the side airbags? My '85 850 GLT says SIPS on the rocker, but the "check your airbags in 10 years" sticker on the door only mentions the dash airbags.

      My understanding has been that SIPS referred to the improved protection from intrusion in side impacts rather than to side airbags. My '95 940 also has SIPS on the rockers and certainly does not have side airbags.

      Lee,

      Thanks. I forgot about the SIPS issue.
