1999 V70 Struts/Mounts/Rotors V70-XC70

My V70, 99, 130K on it, is making clanking noises from the front end. Took it to a very respected frame/alignment place today and the guy drove it, put it on a lift and showed me bad mounts and struts. Rotors also shot, pads OK. $700 for mounts and struts including alignment. $300 for rotors.

Any thoughts??????????

Thanks!

It took me 2 hours to replace the right front strut, mount, etc. 1 hour to replace the left front. I bought expensive Koni Sport struts, but I have Nivomats in the rear and left them alone.
A good spring compressor at Sears is around $60.

Swapping rotors for new ones is a piece of cake.

If it has never had a set of upper strut mounts then it no doubt needs them. Struts and mounts are about $190.00 per side, and an hour labor per side, four wheel alignment is in the area of $100.00 so you are looking at about $650.00 plus tax on the parts for your struts, mounts, and alignment. That's pretty right on with what he quoted, the brakes on the other hand run closer to $400.00 in my shop. Pads are $85.00, rotors $130.00 per set, and labor is $170.00=$385.00+ tax. You call it out as $300.00 for rotors, is that for pads and rotors, I would think so. All of this stuff can be done cheaper if you have the know how and the tools, among other things you will need a strut spring compressor and air tools are always nice when working on struts. When working on brakes I always use factory stuff, it costs more but you will not find better stuff and I just run the Boge struts and mounts, they are the factory supplier to Volvo for that stuff, in fact if you look at the strut mounts close enough you can see where they ground off the Volvo name and part number.

Mark, your response is very helpful. The shop claims they will use mounts from Volvo and Monroe struts. I have no idea which model strut. Didn't ask. This does include an alignment as they are a frame shop, etc. and can handle it. The fellow told me the pads did NOT need to be replaced, just the rotors. Sounds like his prices are in line with what you consider correct and fair. Is there a specific type of strut I want to use????? This guy wasn't pushing Monroe but that is what they use. He said he could get whatever I preferred.

I can't work on the car myself. I can barely hang a picture. Thanks again.

I would never replace the rotors and not replace the pads at the same time. Pads wear in to the rotors they are clamping and after multiple heat/cool cycles are not "like new". If you are having this work done what's a little more for new pads to treat those new rotors decently.

Just get OEM struts, mounts, etc and rotors.
