1993 850 head job. 850

I was wondering how hard it would be to take the head off the car and have a valve job done on a 1993 volvo 850? The timing belt broke and bent the valves, the car has 61,000 original miles. Asking price of the car is $800.

1993 was not the best year for Volvo 850s, to say the least. The $800 asking price is pretty good for a parts car, which is about what it is worth.
Look for a 1995 850 in the $1200-1500 range that works.

Most people here advise shying away from the '93's due to some of their unique, read expensive, parts. If you go for the car you'd probably be better off replaceing the entire engine if you can find a good low mileage one. They're always for sale on e-bay. You don't know if a rod was bent along with the valves.

I agree that I probably wouldn't go for this car, but the stuff about avoiding the '93 goes against my experience. Everything is simple and to my harkens back to my 240. She's 5 speed and of course no turbo, those didn't kick in 'til '94. Some parts are cheaper on the '93, for example ball joints are ~$20 whereas for my 99 V70, they are $120 because you have to replace the whole arm. I got a second set of allows for snows for $100, etc. I have almost 204,000 and it runs like a top. Also, '93 was not the first year of the 850. I beleive they came out in '91; '93 was the first year that Volvo exported the 850 to the US market. One good argument for holding out for a later model is the side airbag which came in 95...?

As mentioned, I have a '99 AWD. I always feel like Volvo was in it's prime back in the 70s 80s and early 90s. My 99 seems like a fancy Lada sometimes.

      Ben
