ABS Light, speedometer, and turn signal malfunctioning 850 1996

OK - this post is primarily to prove to my husband that I'm not nuts. My 1996 850 wagon (with 260K+ miles) has been acting weird on me. Occcasionally, while driving, the ABS light will come on, the speedometer needle will stop working, and the turn signals won't come on. After turning off the iginition, all three will resume to work normally (ABS light goes off, speedometer works, and turn signals operate properly). My husband thinks I'm ready for the asylum, and that there is no way on earth (or anywhere else in this galaxy) that all stars would be aligned such these three events would occur at the same time for any reason. Could someone provide a reasonable explanation?

I agree with Lee and David

Jiggle the 850's key in the ignition.

In my case the headlights also went out!

But to stop the problem in the future: I would think that like most other drivers, you would have your Volvo key on a key-ring with a lot of other (heavy) keys. This seems to be the cause.

The weight of those keys distorts the angle of the key going into the ignition. This causes the short circuit.

The solution: use only the separate Volvo key. But you may still have to jiggle it.

So: you are not going nuts.

    Good luck.

Yes, my 95 850 has a very similar problem. When I start the car, the key does not flip all the way back to where it should, but instead stays just a hair too far forward so everytime I start I need to jiggle the key back. If I don't, the ABS light won't go off, the turn signals won't work (however my speedometer is never affected).

It sounds like the electrical part of your ignition switch is going bad. The next time it happens just jiggle the key and see it it clears up. If so, you need the electrical part of the switch.
