Now I need help with the '96 850 1996

Hey all,

Even though I don't drive my prized '96 850 as much as I once did, I still keep up with what's going on with it, since my folks have decided to drive it on an occasional basis now. Didn't see much driving time over the winter but it seems to be doing all right- has about 85k on it at the moment.

My dad called me this evening to discuss something that could be a potential problem. He said that when starting it after leaving work, he noticed both the ABS and "Tracs Off" warning lights remained on well after all the other ones had gone off. He thought it was odd. He turned the car off, let it sit cold for about 5 minutes, then started it again. That time each warning light went off on the dot. However, at home, when he shifted from Drive to Reverse (it's automatic), he heard what he described as a "loud, banging noise" resonating from the underneath, perhaps from the transmission. Since I'm not at home, I can't see what the problem is, which makes me upset. But dad said when going from Park to Drive or vice-versa, it seems fine and engages the gears quickly.

I would suppose it's probably either the ABS sensor (happens a lot on '96s) or PNP switch. Maybe it is the PNP switch. If it's the ABS sensor, I recall some of you mentioning a gentleman who can rebuild those things. What's the guy's name, and is he reputable? Any help here would be appreciated!

As far as the clunk from D to R, if the car was moving even a little bit, it will make that noise. Tell your Dad he MUST come to a full stop :)

Ask you dad if he has a bunch of stuff hanging on the keys. When my ignition switch started to go bad the ABS light would flicker off and on if I wiggled the key slightly. It's a relatively easy $75 part cost fix. The tranny "bang" doesn't sound good but maybe a fluid change would help? My '95's been doing that for a few years now after it get's warmed up. A CV joint could be going bad too but 85K is sort of early for that unless a boot has split due to age and the grease has come out.

Hello,

Four external torx capscrews hold the ABS computer onto the pump housing. Once removed, the outside perimeter can be cut with a Dremel tool. This will separate the two halves. Use a pencil iron and re-solder (use new solder) the terminal connections. Reseal the case with epoxy and clamp together. Reinstall the part and enjoy that you just saved about $600. (Maybe buy your wife a nice surprise?)
