Random airconditioning cut-out problem - restart fix 850 1994

Hi all

I swear I've checked through the previous posts about airconditioning problems and I can't find a similar problem (or I could be wrong)

Now, my airconditioning cuts out every now and then. It might not happen for months at a time. I used to think it was a hot weather only problem but yesterday wasn't warm. I used to think it was a high speed setting thing but it was only at the middle yesterday.

Whilst not cutting out the power completely, some weeks ago, when I set the fan speed higher, all electricals cut out for a very brief moment and then came back on as per normal. This had never happened before.

When the airconditioning does cut out, it doesn't come back on at all, until I stop the car and restart the engine. That invariably fixes it.

Any clues on what can be wrong?

The freon level 'should' be fine since I just got it topped up in December.

Thanks in advance of answers!

Regards
Lucast

Initially, I thought it might be a clutch gap problem:

But when you said that the electrics cut out, that means that the S belt was not turning the alternator, ie. slipping. How old is the Sbelt? Or is the compressor freezing up due to dry bearings?

      Hey Klaus

Funny you should mention about the S belt. I was telling my mechanic in December that there was a funny noise coming from the S belt side of the engine, like a rattly mechanical sound. That was when I took it into the shop to get the AC regassed. The regas settled the noise down a bit it's still there when the AC is on. If the AC is OFF, the noise is not there.

I don't know how old the belt is to be honest. When I bought the car, it had about 125K kms on it. I got the timing belt changed at the point of purchase but regrettably, not the S-belt. I am regretting it since, from what I have read, the 850 serpentine belt is a PITA to change out.

If it turns out to be the compressor bearings, can they be DIY lubed?

Would you even think that the blower stage resistor might be a problem as well?

      Thanks!

      Regards

The timing belt can be a PITA, but the S belt is only 30 minutes or less! Very easy to do. Just remember that the new S belt travels in a different pattern than the old one and you will be in great shape.
Also check the rollers on the S belt to make sure there is no play in their bearings.

As far as I know, the compressor bearings are sealed and not serviceable. Any AC shop can check out the compressor. While the S belt is off, or the tensioner relaxed, you can manually turn the compressor and feel for tightness or internal rubbing. It should be smooth and easy to turn.

Nope, the resistor would be last on the list.

Thanks Klaus, you've been a great help. I am going to have a look at the S belt and roller bearings then. Is there a diagram somewhere for the new S-belt looping?

          Cheers. Lucas.
