Looking at a 1998 XC V70-XC70 1998

Actually, my wife is. 1998 XC, 140,000 miles reasonable cosmetic condition, but ..... needs a steering rack. Owner wants $2,000, says his mechanic will do the rack job for $700.

From some research, it looks like a $250-300 outlay for parts, and 3 - 5 hours of a mechanics time to fix. Is that a reasonable estimate? Also, any other must do/should do replacements that go with a rack replacements?

I'd also appreciate any comments on this model for known bugs, good points, bad points? The missus is driving a 1990 745 GLE right now, nice car.

On one hand, buying for $2,000 leaves a lot of room for spending on fixes - best guess on street value without major issues is about $4,000 to $4,500. On the other hand, I feel really comfortable rooting around in a B230 powered brick, and not at all comfortable in an engine that sits sideways.

    Looking at a 1998 XC V70-XC70 1998

I am on my second Cross Country, the first was a 1998. There were a lot of little problems with the car but in all it was a good car (98,000mi). You may want to check to see if all the recalls were preformed. I traded it in on a new 2004 XC and really love the car. I have to agree, if you don’t need a XC you may want to look at other Volvos.

If the current owner doesn't want to spend $700 on his car, why would you? Sounds like there are other issues. If the bevel gear is making noise or leaking, that is $2300. The AC may no longer work = $1200 for a new evaporator.

Tell your wife to save some money and look around for an 03-04 XC. Much nicer car!

1998 - I have one. Save your future $$ in expenses and go for a newer Honda Accord. Much more reliable and less costly for maintenance.

Looking at a 1998 XC - do you really need XC V70-XC70 1998

The engine sitting sideways is not a problem. Millions of them work dependably for their owners all over the world. Maybe a more important question is do you and your wife really need XC? Are you going skiing in Vermont in winter? Remember, for used cars, complexity costs, often a lot.
