About to Replace Voltage Reg. Do You Need Lube???

When removing the volage regulator from my 93 850 glt it appears that there was a lot of something built up where the brushes meet the shaft. My question is, is this some type of lubricant or is it just dirt? If it is lube then what kind and how should i apply it, thanks in advance.

STOP!!! That is not lube, that is residue from the magnets (brushes) that have worn down. If you put a lubricant on those brushes you will not produce any electricity.
