SRS Reset - Anything more I don't understand? 850 1995

Hi:

I have been an infrequent poster to the Brickboard but appreciate all the helpful advice given on here.

I've read a lot about resetting the SRS light and know how it's done, however, I am still getting the code 2-3-2 for Left Tensioner open circuit.

The history: I am the owner of a 1995 850 Turbo sedan and had to replace the driver's seat belt assembly. Someone else did the work. The battery negative was not disconnected, only the connector to the assembly behind the side panel (B panel?) Anyway, seat belt works fine but SRS light stays on. That is the only code that comes up. Clearing the code at the engine diagnositc module does not clear it, so I am wondering if there's anything physical I need also to do--clean contacts (and if so, where/how?) I don't want to unplug anything if there's a danger of the pyrotechnic exploding or the SIPS bag deploying. Can someone give me some baby steps to solve this problem as I will be attempting it myself? Email is okay. sbarrett@cruzio.com

Suzanne

The good thing is that you don't have to worry about SIPS, that is mechanical and is set off when the seat hits the side of the door.

I agree with Ozark Lee. You have to remove the B pillar cover and look. Perhaps the plug is not seated properly.

Thanks. I unplugged and re-plugged the connector, checked the wires, etc., tested and got same results. Guess I'm going to have to live with the annoying red light. Bleah!

There is another poster who is looking for a new clock spring for his seat belt. Read it. It is on top of the AWD list.

If you know your radio code, try unplugging the battery for 30 minutes. That just might help?

SRS Reset - Update 850 1995

Thanks for both your replies. As a last measure I unplugged the battery, cleaned and checked all wires, connectors, cleaned the winding wheel, put it back together and ran the codes again. Code still comes up 2-3-2 and won't clear. How frustrating.

SRS Reset - Update 850 1995

This is a frustrating problem and you must be very careful while testing it. It sounds like the reel itself is bad but you cannot really check the reel with an ohmmeter. If you try to measure its resistance, even with the car battery unplugged, there is a very good chance that you will trigger it.

Was your replacement seatbelt new or used? If it was used I'm going to guess that it is bad but the only nondestructive way to tell is to replace it with a know good or use the test resistor.

Good luck with it.

SRS Reset - Update 850 1995

Thanks for the info. The seat belt was used. Difference in price was the $71. I paid versus $500 from dealer (installed).

The problem can really only be one of three things.

The seatbelt SRS wires to the reel did not get plugged back in.

The seatbelt reel is bad (open).

or the wiring to the reel is damaged.

Unfortunately the B Pillar cover needs to come back off to figure out what is wrong.

Volvo has a special test resistor that they use for diagnostic purposes but they conveniently don't say what the resistance is.
