Need input on replacement engine choices 850 1996

I am sorry to say that my old pal the white 850 glt wagon affectionately known as the "fridge" has given up the ghost. She had a small tapping sound that has become a really loud slap in the engine, and I am going to replace the motor as the rest of the car is in really nice condition. It is a 20 valve 2.4 without turbo and the 5 speed manual transmission. I am going to replace the clutch while swapping engines. Does anyone have a good suggestion for an engine, or have a particular clutch that they like. THE STOCK CLUTCH WAS STILL GOING STRONG AT 197000 MILES. I dont know if I have ever made it that far on an original clutch before. I am really dissapointed that the motor didnt make it to the 300k mark. I am looking for suggestions on the replacement motor. Is there a vendor who rebuilds, should I just swap in a low miles junkyard motor. Are there any performance motors out there that I dont have to make many changes to use? Any hope of swapping in a turbo motor without modifications? any input would be appreciated. Thanks..Keith

I'm with willresper on this one. Before you go through the expense of swapping in a new engine with/without turbo, find out what the noise really is.
If it is piston slap, then compression test will verify it. If it is hydraulic lifters, then the O rings at the bottom of the engine sump need to be replaced to get the pressure back up.

You could swap in a turbo, I suggest light pressure, from a 97. You will need the ECM for that engine setup, plus a lot of vacuum lines to run the turbo.

If you do a swap, replace the rear main seal. Otherwise replace the RMS during your clutch swap.

I watched a couple of novices race around a small closed road course a a Street Survival class. A vette with a 457 engine driven by an early 20 something, and an 855 N/A with a manual shifter by a 16 year old. The 855 actually passed the vette on the back stretch after gaining on him lap after lap! The vette kept loosing it on the hard 90 degree turns and the 855 didn't slow down a lot. You have a good combination engine/tranny.

Are you sure the engine is gone? It's just a thought, but if it's just the noise then it may not be the end. I was alarmed when I noticed what appeared to be a light rod knock in my 850, but it turns out it was just the serpentine belt. There was a four inch section of the belt that was missing all of the ribs. A new belt and 15 minutes later and the "rod knock" was fixed.

    Good luck!

I'll let you know how I make out, I am searching for th esame thing for my '96 850 non-turbo wagon.
I heard the All American Auto Wreckers in East patchogue Long Island sometimes has 850 engines in stock, so I'm calling them later today.
