Auto Trans oil lever S70 1998

I have a 1998 S70, with the select-trac tranny. Is the automatic transmission fluid level checked with the engine idling or shut off?? The manual says to idle engine, shift through gears and then "wait 3 minutes". But is never says to shut engine off or keep idling. I thought most auto trannys' were checked idling, but my level is right when I shut the engine off. Maybe the previous owner got it wrong?? or is it checked with the engine off??
Thanks for any help.

Ed

    I never saw a 1998 with a select tract.

The tranny fluid is always checked while idling. The best way is after the fluid is hot, car driven in stop and go traffic for 15 minutes, and check the HOT side of the dipstick.
The level should be at the top mark.
