need help advice on misfires son is at school with car 850 1995

ODBI computer.

Car had timing belt changed about 2 months ago car was driven around town only with limited highway

Son came home decided to take car back to school. On his way CEL went on (this was yesterday). He now says car is really running rough. Had him pull codes all misfires. 545 452 552 454 554 543. Told him to reset.

Bought car about 4 months ago did not tune it up, car seemed idle and run fine.

My thoughts.
- Timing belt skipped a tooth (but he says he has power going up hills)
- Car is in need of tuneup (but car was idling fine with no miss on acceleration)
- Car did idle a little rough until it got warm when I used it but only a little.

At a loss since he is up a school and I am hours away.

Wanted him to drive it home but we are both concerned about damage.

I am at a loss.

Madness

I take it that he doesn't have a plug wrench either. Because it appears to smooth out above 35mph, it may not be the plugs but they need replacing anyway. I prefer Champions myself, the plug is in the back of the owner's manual as a replacement suggestion.

Ignore the 5xx numbers, your cat converter will be just fine.

If he has a torx driver, have your son take off the engine cover so that he can see the wires and plugs. They might have not been seated correctly if they were pulled off during the timing belt change. Then, when it is dark, look for arcing.

If the engine smooths out on the highway, it will be safe to drive home. It's only 2 hours. Also have him check the water temp when the engine is warmed up to verify the ECT sensor is working properly.

All of those codes are misfire codes. Bad Gas? If not it could be an issue with the distributor cap arcing over.

I had a bunch of those codes after a tuneup but I used the wrong plugs. Never, ever, use Bosch Platinum 2 plugs in these cars. The gap is completely wrong and it really can't be adjusted.

Bosch Copper FR7DC plugs have worked great for me and they are around $1.00 each at NAPA.

My bet is that a new cap (Bosch), Rotor (Bosch), Plugs (Bosch FR7DC gapped to 0.028), and Wires (NOT Bosch - Use the Bougicord wires) and it will run like a top. Other than that look under the hood at night for sparking around the coil - it could be going bad.

He says once he gets going around 35 the car smooths off. BTW I had filled up his car at a local Sunoco before he left. Bad Gas? could be. Unsure if it is a risk for him to drive it home. 120 miles?

My gut says he will be fine. These cars are great about getting you home, one way or another, unless the fuel pump croaks. Based on your description the fuel pump really doesn't sound like his issue. Has there been a lot of rain near his campus?
